Hi!
I've read a lot of stuff here about networking, but I still find my home LAN a bit slow...
Here's the deal:
BEFORE:
1 PC WIN 98 w/ a 10/100 Ethernet card
1 PC WIN ME w/ a 10/100 Ethernet card
1 HUB 10/100
1 DSL CABLE MODEM (or router?)
using probably NETBEUI protocol between 2 PC's.Result: Good network speed, I don't know exactly a value, but it seemed faster than NOW. In addition, the COLLISION led on the hub blinked on heavy transfers.
NOW:
1 PC WIN 98 w/ a 10/100 Ethernet card
1 PC WIN XP w/ a 10/100 Ethernet card
1 HUB 10/100
1 DSL CABLE MODEM (or router?)
using NETBEUI protocol between 2 PC's.Result: Satisfactory network speed. I've tried TCP/IP protocol before the NETBEUI, but the speedy was the same. I thought NETBEUI was faster than TCP/IP for small home networks, like mine... NOW, the Collision led never blinks!
Speed: I'm on a 100 Mbits/s = 12.5 MBytes/s LAN connection.
But when I transfer a pack of files that is about 100 MBytes (doesn't matter if it's from pc1 to pc2 or the other way around), it takes 50 seconds, instead of taking 8 seconds!!! So, the speed I'm actually getting is 2 MBytes/s, instead of 12.5 MBytes/s!!!Isn't that speed strange? How about you guys that have similar config.? How's the speed for file copying?
Waiting for an answer...
Thanks!

The LAN speed depending from the different things. For instance, if you xDSL unknown device supporting only 10 Mb speed and you have the HUB (not a Switch), so all of your PCs will use ONLY this bandwidth, no matter which maximim speed does your NICs has. Also you have to know that the ethernet networks can work stable with about 30% utilized capacity. Moreover, the speed of copying will depends from the Windows, e.d. from free resources, network protocols, applications used for copying files and stuff like this..
Finally, I think that 100Mb for 1 minute is enough speed.
