I have two PCs and would like to share internet connection, printer etc.
The internet connected machine runs Windows NT and the other Windows 98. Both have USB ports but not network connections.
Can I just get a cable and connect them together??

Yep. Look under "Help" for "direct Cable connections" and click the subtopic "establishing".

First I need to ask what type of Internet connection do you have? Dial-up or broadband? Second you say in your post that you have XP home then you say in the body of the post you have NT and 98. Which way is it?
If your going to get two Ethernet cards and hook them together without a hub, switch, or router then you would need a crossover cable and not a patch cable. If you connect with a hub, switch, or router then you would use a patch cable.

Also remember 98 Second Edition has internet connection sharing. 1st edition does not.
If it's broadband, get two NIC's, a router, two patch cables, and have some fun!
