I am networking two PCs using a Dlink ADSL/Cable Modem router. One PC running Windows 98SE, the other PC running Windows XP. The router is also connect to the internet via a high speed connections Cable Modem connection.

Both computer see the internet without any problem.

However, my problem is the LAN. On the Win98 I can not see the LAN at all. I even can not see the Win98 computer itself. Any time try to browse my Network, the Cursor searches forever. However on the XP I can see any Win98 shared drive and the Win XP computer. Although, it is very slow despite my LAN works on 100mbps and both machines are very fast.
Both computers use automatic settings for the IP addresses. Each computer has a unique name. Both computers has the same workgroup name. Each computer has at least one shared drive.

Please help.

Thanks

Normally I would tell you to install Netbuei, but since XP doesn't support Netbuei, you might try to install IPX\SPX on both computers.

Also, this link shows you how to install Netbuei onto XP:

Dear JMW

Thanks for the reply.

Are you saying for LAN to commuicate TCP/IP is not enough.

What puzzles me is that the Internet works fine on both computers, and the XP computer can see the shared drives on Win98.
Why Win98 can not see shared drives on WinXP?

TCP\IP was designed as a large network and Internet protocol. It wasn't really designed for use in a small LAN. I am not saying TCP\IP won't work on a small network, if properly setup it usually will. However, Netbuei was designed to work on small LANs with little or no setup needed. Netbuei is also faster and more secure when used in a small network. If you bind File and Print Sharing to Netbuei only and not TCP\IP a hacker won't be able to access your shared folders.
IPX\SPX while not quite as fast as Netbuei, requires very little setup either.

If your XP file system is NTFS, there is no way a fat32 system will recognize it at all, no matter what protocol you use. XP with NTFS will recognize fat32 drives, not vice-versa.

That only applys to a duel boot system where you have Windows 98 and Windows XP with NTFS.
When you are in 98 you won't be able to see the NTFS partition. However, over a network, it doesn't matter. How do you think 98 clients can see files on a server with NTFS?

YES

NetBEUI solved my network problems.
My machines now can see and access each other across the LAN and the Internet still works fine.

This is great. Many thanks for all the help.

I can see all directories on the NTFS partition (win XP) from the Win98 machine across the LAN. However, I can access only few NTFS directories from Win98 machine across the LAN. The ones I could not access were the Windows directory itself and the Program Files directory.

You mentioned earlier that I can un-bind TCP/IP from file and printer sharing. I can do that easily from Win98. But I could not see how to do that in Win XP. Can you help, please.

Also you mentioned that using NetBEUI is safe when sharing directories. Can you expand more on this, like how much safe is sharing using NetBEUI when still there is TCP/IP bind to the same network card, and what are the conditions if any, which may increase or decrease the safety of sharing directories while there is an internet connection.

it is quite amazing to me as far as the responses you have gotten.
First, NETBEUI is a broadcat protocal.
You should only use it on a small LAN.
XP does support netbueui, go to the knowledge base as to how to install it.
However, I was having the same problem and after trial and error, I fixed it by removing all DNS settings on my LAN.
There is also a reg hack that allows you to change up the search order. This hack will let you change the hostname resolution
search order. For example you could make it look at NETBIOS before going to DNS.

check it out here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q171567
Also, you can add entries in your lmhost.sam
file on your machines that refer to each other. Give your machines staic ip adresses.
use the 255.255.255.0 subnet mask, keep all in the same subnet and a uniform ip adress.
You may need to check with your pop provider before you change ip configs.

I always use tcp/ip. It is definately the fastest because it uses adressing, not broadcast to work.

You should have file and printer sharing enabled on the LAN,or you will not be able to see your Win 98 box.
Does your router have a firewall or tcp/ip filtering? Mine is a Linksys and it does.
XP has that built in. Win 98 does not.
You can install a firewall software package on the win 98 box to care of your security concerns. I would also install a ani virus trap package. I use PC-illin 2000 and it works great. I think that this should take care of your problem.
You really dont need NETBEUI.

Finally, and perhaps most important:
Make sure you are logged in as Administrator
on both machines and that you have the guest account enabled on the XP box..
XP is much more secure than 98.However, 98 still does use user profiles, even if you are using share level in the password applet.
This, more than any othe thing will improve your speed..for details, see the MS knowledge base
