Im having enourmous problems trying to get a simple home network to, work. I have one broadband connection, connected to the XP Pro machine (always on) which is connected by RJ45 cable to a Belkin 10/100BT Ethernet Switch. There is also a Win 98 (1st edition, NOT SECOND EDITION) machine which is connected by RJ45 cable to the same switch. The windows XP pro machine is set up for sharing its internet connection, and the 98 machine is also set up to recieve a shared internet connection.
Now, the problem, the 98 machine can not view any secure web pages. Also, neither computer can see each other in Network Places. The two computers can sucessfully ping themselves. The XP pro machine can "see" the 98 machine when u use the command " net view" in the Command Prompt box i.e. both machine names are displayed. However when you type command "net view \\98PC" you get an error message, "System error 53 has occured."
When you replace the 98PC with the IP address of the machine, you get the same message.

Hope someone can help

Rob

Can ping IP but not computer name

I have two machines, one running win2k and one running win98,.These machines are already happily sharing an internet connection through a Netgear RP614 Cable/DSL router. I can ping each machine from the other. When I'm on one machine, I can't see the other in Network Neighborhood. How do I troubleshoot this?

A: If you use net view \\computer and get System error 53, you have name resolution problem. Try to be able access the computer by using net use H: \\IP\sharename . If you get error 5 and access is denied. You may have permission issue and can't access the computer using net use \\IP|sharename.
