Hello, I have networked my home PC with my laptop over a 3com 10Mbps 5-port hub. They can both use the internet fine over the hub, but I can't share local information. I have set up and installed NetBEUI protocol via the instructions on the Shields Up! website [http://grc.com/su-rebinding9x.htm] to maintain the best security. I am only able to see the computer I am at when I check network neighborhood. I have tried searching for the computers with no avail also. I have all the drives shared and I have rechecked the bindings. Passwords and logins are both different also. I have read numerous online articles (including ones from the search engine here) which have not helped my problem, so I have finally resorted to pestering you for some help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Couple quick ideas. I'm sure you have checked this, but the computers are in the same workgroup, right? Also, you must login on both computers, not just click cancel. Something else... have you tried just going to the computer by name... eg. \\[COMPUTERNAME]\[SHARENAME]
In my network that would look like \\liq-serv\login
Also, maybe you can't browse because there is no master browser. Thats a long shot, but its worth a try. I honestly have no idea where that setting was anymore.
One last thing. Windows 95, 98, and ME networking if very finicky to be nice. It sucks, to put it bluntly. Sometimes seemingly irrelevent things can screw it up.
Oh yeah, the network cards work and you're using patch not crossover cable, right?
Hope this helps.
Keith

I searched for both computers from both computers with no luck. Both have master server enabled, and I tried disabling it on each of them one at a time. Using patch, not crossover and I don't use a firewall at all. The only thing I have that auto accesses the net is Norton Antivirus. I also installed a newer network card into my home pc. I tried the Dos connection suggestions at www.wown.com, and they didn't work. This aparantly tells me it is a hardware problem. I find this hard to believe because I have used both NIC's to access the net for quite some time and the TCP\IP networking worked fine. Are there any general utilities to check hardware? And are there any alternatives to Network Neighborhood since it is widely known as a piece of Sh*t? Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the replies.

Why are you using netbeui protocol? Remove it and just use tcp/ip , file sharing for microsoft network, and client for microsoft networks and obviously your network card. set ip address automatically. Same workgroup names and file and printer sharing click share files, and printer if you want.
I have win3.11, 95,98se,2000, xp pro all networked without netbeui and working fine sharing internet and files. I want to add linux pc but i'm not that smart yet! All I can get it to do is access the internet.
Just to note with your hub you didn't need a crossover that's just for connecting two computers without a hub or switch.

The reason I want to use netbeui is for security reasons. If you use TCP\IP you have to leave a port 139 open which can be accessed by anyone with a port sniffer. I don't really want others using my drives as a secret place to store data or start printing stuff on my printer. Anyone know how to make TCP/IP secure since I cannot get netbeui to work?
