I am trying to network two PCS via ethernet cards and a cross cable connection (no hub). I would like to be able to share resources/files between the two computers and access the internet from both, using the one LAN connection.
However in my network neighbourhood I cannot see the other computer. If I search for the computers thru windows explorer (tools---map network drive) I can only start at F drive. If I type the computer name in the run dialogue e.g. \\computer I get the message not logged on, inaccessible.
I have enabled file and print sharing. Both computers are in the same workgroup. I have selected which drives to be shared. I have tried changing the IPs and subhost details, but this simply stopped my internet from working completely. I have the correct protocols loaded NetBEUI, Client for Microsoft Networks etc. But no joy!
I am using Win98 SE. I have tried downloading a proxy (analog x).
Can anyone help me! The drivers for the ethernet cards are correctly installed and they are working properly.
Can anyone suggest what is wrong or take me thru step by step to correct the problem?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please email me direct as I do no get a chance to check this board very often.
xSimon

I tried similar setup yesterday :
win XP -- crossover cable -- Win 98 SECould share internet and files.
Surprisingly, computers can see each other only when connected to internet. I still have to resolve this issue.
Following link was very helpful to me :

maybe you should try to install NetBEUI protocol. The problem I had was that the tcp/ip protocol was used to share the internet conection and netbeui for the files. If this didn't work u might try to install ipx
hope I could provide any help
