hi everyone. quick simple question. we are getting satelite internet for our house from wildblue. (we will be getting this in sept)... so we dont have it yet. im trying to plan ahead.
we want to share this internet with our lodge (which is 280 ft away) i purchased two netgear switches (fs108, 8-port fast ethernet switch)
i will have one in our basement, and one in the resorts basement. will this work?
my question is.. can i plug the internet from the satelite modem into port 1 port 2 go to our wireless router for our house, and port three the underground cable to the resort.. on the resort side, port one to the front desk computer, port two do the office computer and port three from the cable underground (our house/internet)
will this switch do the job?
or do i need a router with DCHP?
i want the internet to work on all the computers all the time...
should i return the switch? and get a router?

thanks everyone!!

pj

You would basically plug each switch into a LAN port on the wireless router. Unless the switches autodetect an uplink or have an uplink port, you may need crossover cables for this. PC's can plug into the remaining two LAN ports on the router, or any of the 8 ports on the switches.

just two switches...
can i use one of the port on one of the switches for the satelite internet?

SWITCH #1
port 1: internet from satelite
port 2: my computer
port 3: dad computer
port 4: underground cable to lodge

SWITCH #2
port 1: front desk computer
port 2: office computer
port 3: chef computer
port 4: cable from house with internet on it

No, you need one router device to share the internet.

You mentioned you had a wireless router...

"can i plug the internet from the satelite modem into port 1 port 2 go to our wireless router for our house..."

If you don't, you need a router, doesn't have to be wireless though.

You also could multihome one PC and use ICS or some 3'd party proxy software to share the internet amongs all your PC's. The internet would go into one NIC and the other to your LAN (ie: into a switch).

But, a highspeed internet router is a better idea and not a very expensive one.

I don't recommend ICS because the system sharing the net connection must be on for any machine to access the internet, it's more prone to failure, it's not as fast, and it's not as secure. With routers so cheap, ICS really should only be used to share dialup connections unless there are special circumstances.

Circumstances like having limited cash to work with.

I don't recommend this solution either, but I thought I would point out that it is available and if you already have at least one PC running 2000/XP you have it available at no further cost. Combined with the free version of Zone Alarm firewall, it will work and be relatively safe.

I agree a highspeed internet router is a much better solution. It should look something like this when you're done:

Internet >> Router >> Switch 1 >> Switch 2

With clients plugged into the appropriate switch closest to them.

switch2 is also off the router like switch1. SOHO wireless routers come with 4 ports.

i guess you guys wouldnt know this for sure..
but wouldnt the satelitte come with a modem that already has dchp? and then i could plug it into the switch...?

the thing i want, is all computer to have internet.. but to not have to have any one system on to be able to.. i want the internet running right to the switch.. not to a computer first... soo, your saying, i need to run the internet to a router first...
i do have one..
but i wanted it in another area... kinda hard to explian...

i have a netgear wireless router as well, with 4 port...
i could use that for the one at the house...
and the switch for the lodge...

(i wanted the wireless on the first floor, not in the basement..... but the cables are all coming in from the basement.. and im at 290FT... dont want to push it...)
ahhhh
ill figure it out somehow...

thanks everyone!

It may very well come with a NAT router, but obviously we can't tell you that.

"the thing i want, is all computer to have internet.. but to not have to have any one system on to be able to.. i want the internet running right to the switch.. not to a computer first... soo, your saying, i need to run the internet to a router first..."

Correct. ICS is then not the solution you want. You want a router. BTW, ICS turns a Windows machine into a NAT router. Same thing as a router, aside from it not being an appliance, and it's using a Windows OS instead of whatever Netgear or another vendor uses.

"i have a netgear wireless router as well, with 4 port...

Correct. You need ONE router device since you're sharing one internet connection with multiple PC's. You do NOT need more than one router. Whichever router you get must plug WIRED into the satellite modem. This particular connection between the modem and the router can't be wireless.

"It happens."
