I have set the network address for xp but I dont know how to set solaris up to join the network (im using a crossover cable to connect them).

depends, how good are you in x-term? you need to set internet connection sharing on the windows XP box. here is how it should work: winxp box 2 network cards, One to Internet one to solaris box. set up ICS on the XP box so that the two nics have their connections bridged. then you have to set up the default router and the rest in solaris. the default router should be the IP of the NIC on the XP box connected to the solaris one. I hope that made sense. there is more detailed and really good help at: docs.sun.com
