OK plz, anyone help. I really need help on this stuff, its driving me up the wall,i 've read everything, heck I've done the prac side to it, I just cant get these questions!

1. Hosts on a typical LAN would use a combination of static and dynamic
addressing. Is it necessary to use both types? Explain your answer.

2. What is APIPA? Is it a standard feature of TCP/IP based systems? When is it
used?

3. A computer is configured to obtain an address automatically. The computer
cannot communicate with other computers on the network. The user runs
ipconfig to verify settings and finds an IP address of 169.254.45.123. Where
has this address come from, and what are possible causes of the machine
failing to connect?

4. Win2000/XP based computers can use APIPA to automatically obtain IP
Addresses without the operator having to manually set IP details. What
configuration details ARE NOT managed by APIPA.

5. A DHCP service provides IP addresses for clients requesting automatic
allocation of addresses. Does the host (client) need to know the IP address of
the DHCP server ? Explain your answer.

6. If a DHCP service is shut down after providing addresses to clients, what
happens to the IP settings of the clients?

7. What are the significance of:
1. Scope,
2. DHCP Scope Options,
3. Exclusions
4. Reservations

8. A client machine boots up with an IP address of 169.254.3.2, and then some
minutes later the address changes to 10.232.40.191 without any intervention
from the administrator/user. How did this happen?

Please anyone help in the next 30mins, I'll be eternally grateful!

1. Yes. Servers, printers and other network devices like that are normally static whereas clients tend to use DHCP. Static on network devices is the best practice as you don't want DNS problems which you could easily get if they were DHCP and their IP address changed.

2. Direct quote from webopedia

Automatic Private IP Addressing, a feature of later Windows operating systems. With APIPA, DHCP clients can automatically self-configure an IP address and subnet mask when a DHCP server isn't available. When a DHCP client boots up, it first looks for a DHCP server in order to obtain an IP address and subnet mask. If the client is unable to find the information, it uses APIPA to automatically configure itself with an IP address from a range that has been reserved especially for Microsoft. The IP address range is 169.254.0.1 through 169.254.255.254. The client also configures itself with a default class B subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. A client uses the self-configured IP address until a DHCP server becomes available.

3. The address shown is an APIPA address (see #2). Possible causes: PC not connected to network. Bad NIC. Bad cable. PC not on network with DHCP server.

4. Static IP addresses

5. No it doesn't. I broadcasts a request for an address which DHCP servers watch for. When they get a request (ie: PC boots up) they send one to requesting client.

6. Nothing happens unless the client reboots or releases it's DHCP assigned IP. With no DHCP service available, the clients will use an APIPA address.

7.
7-1: Refers to the defined set of IP addresses available to clients
7-2: Options should be DNS address(es), gateway etc
7-3: IP addresses excluded from the scope
7-4. IP addresses reserved from the scope.

For both 7-3 & 4 these addresses are unavailable to clients via DHCP.

8. Clients APIPA rerequested an IP from DHCP and received it.

All this info is freely available on the web and all you have to do is search for it.
