I have a 9 node network using DHCP.
All of the machines have been working great until this past week.Node 1: XP PRO / SIS900 Onboard Nic and 2.4 gig P4 is assigned IP by the DHCP of 192.168.0.102.
Node 4: XP PRO / SIS900 Onboard Nic and 1.7 Celeronj is also assigned by the DHCP an address of 192.168.0.102.
Each time I ipconfig /release ... /renew, they both get the same IP address?
How can this be and how do i get around it?
Any ideas?
George

Check your DHCP <nobr><a class="iAs" style="border-bottom:darkgreen 1px solid;text-decoration:underline;color:darkgreen;background-color:transparent;" href="http://itxt.vibrantmedia.com/al.asp?ipid=7&cc=us&cf=1&di=64493&ts=20031113081501&redir=http://www5.overture.com/d/sr/?xargs=02u3hs9yoakE1rTTDDhgxNf2t9rJBJyD4JTaS9B7D1cXuXYstll0c2L4%2FI5586DEZJWMZ94vmfzLnI2HP2uNmpqo%2BrETDZbo7bRYokrryPz4JkndZpjPeE0wJU7BnJ%2FclSiSTCM649G%2BgrMAlcxSX4nMyX0c%2Bf%2FdNyoNp%2Fpm5Mu%2BgN0RuL4MYZgpRARpPpURIYixApJqsqiCUZq86meg1LqXDvnWrNravtbm3489Zbzd1M3CxPSoWHzlj8HAClcrSOwXGIwCUwCVCIMXTK9303qYEVYiKfkfYwJTao54bk7%2FK2w7X%2BnW4QhmkvhcHPjFynl0zpB7eyYt9cvEI1RxQIh34JiQBvYzA%3D" target="_blank" oncontextmenu="return false;" onmouseover="kwE(event,64493);" onmouseout="kwL(event);" onmousemove="kwM(64493);">server</nobr> configuration. 192.168.0.X is not a valid IP address.

What is you network setup? Do you have more than one DHCP server in the setup somewhere. If there is more than one DHCP server one of them needs to be disabled.
192.168.0.x is a valid IP address. It is a CLass C private address as assigned by Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)

Nothing in RFC 1918 to say it cannot be used. Infact RFC 1918 allows 192.160.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

Are you sure you don't have one of the NIC's MAC address reserved in DHCP?
If there are no reserved addresses, I'd try installing a PCI NIC from another manufacturer and attach you patch cable to that one only. If you get a different address assigned, then the MAC address of both onboard NICs may be the same (although this is not supposed to be possible). You can also view the MAC address using IPCONFIG before trying another NIC.
Good luck.

Net 0 is a network ID, net 255 is a broadcast address. I don't think you can have those assigned to a node on a network.

192.168.0.X is a valid address ip address you just cant have 192.168.0.0 cause thats the network address.
192.168.0.255 is a broadcast address for the 192.186.0 network
192 is a class C address so which the 4 octets would follow Network.Network.Network.Host
The address he is using would be consider as a private ip address so as long as he is using the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
In theory it should work!
one thing i was thinking of is too release both nodes ip address and shut them down. once they have been shut down boot up one machine and see what ip address it takes and wait a few min or longer and boot the second one up...depends on the time of the dhcp hold ips address to mac..
other than that make sure there is only one dhcp server.

Dood, 192.168.0.x is absolutely valid -- in fact, some older SMC broadband routers use that octet as the default. By the way, I'm a LAN Administrator.

Yes 192.168.0.x is valid. I have used this set up for about 2 years now. I installed this latest machine and this problem has started. These are Asus MB with Fast SIS900 ob nics. I have not checked yet, (will today) and see if there has been a screw up and the same mac address has been assigned to different mb.
This has happed with Asus before. They put put a series of P4S533-VM with the same Mac address.I believe this will give the two machines the same IP would it not? Guess I wont know until I check the macs on all the machines.
If not I will remove the DHCP and hard code IP addresses for all of the machines.
Many thanks to all those whom helped. I will post back what I have found when I figure it out.
George
