I am attempting to network my HP Pavilion (Described above) using it's standard ethernet adapter to my Emachines 533ID2 (Win 98SE / 256MB)that uses a new Linksys LNE100TX Fast Adapter through a netgear FS605V2 fast ethernet switch. I have disabled the Windows Firewall, checked the IP addresses, verified that both are using TCP/IP and tried a few different cables but I can only Ping from the HP to the emachines but not from the emachines to the HP. Additionally a shared folder is visible on the emachines (and useable there) but does not show up in the HP network (not even the HP shows up there!).; It does not appear that I am getting any actual file sharing abilities between the computers. Eventually I would like the network to perform filesharing, print sharing, act as a platform for multiplayer games, and internet share (unfortunately only dial up through the HP!). Any ideas that you may provide would be appreciated to establish proper communication between my machines.
Thanks,
Shawn

Hi
have a look here simple file sharing,
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm
if you can ping the win98 pcs the prob lies with the xp pc.regards

Dropkick,
I just reviewed the site you suggested, it has some information on file sharing that I didn't know ($), however it basically took me through the network setup wizard which I have already done (with the exception that I manually turned off the windows firewall. Additional information includes, the hp xp machines states that I do not have access to the network I have created (it will not show contents) and although it will not ping the emachine win98se machine, the ping from the win98se machine does register in the recieved area of the computers "Local Area Connection Status". It's like the HP XP machine sees the information, it just does not want to acknowledge it! Any additional info that you may have would be appreciated!Emachine 533ID2

Hi
again, (im not trying to teach u stuff here btw so dont get me wrong just some helpful stuff.)check these settings are the same, ie default
http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/w2ktcpip.htm
(top 2 diags)
probably have 'qos' on xp pc its ok to ignore.what is the ip address/ subnet of the xp machine after booting?
start/run type cmd (ok) in the dos box
type ipconfig/all
should read like below;dhcp enabled
ip address somthing like 192.168.x.?
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.x.?
dhcp server ?.?.?.?(where x ,? is a number)
now check your router gateway is same as the gateway above.
is dhcp switched on in the router setup?
should be a setting in its config.now compare to the win 98 pcs whats the difference other than a consequitive ip address? (use, run; winipcfg instead of ipconfig http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/winipcfg.htm)
if your getting default ipaddress 169.254.?.?then i suspect the dhcp is timing out for some reason, time to check cables and connectors.
last resort uninstall HPpc's tcpip & services reboot reinstall check all share settings again.
dont use share wizard do it manually.
share with a test folder.
regards (hopefully some usefull help:)

Thanks for sticking with me on this one dropkick. I am actually on Dial Up so I do not believe that I have a DHCP IP address. I will eventually attempt to send both computers through the HP for Internet access (if possible) Currently I am just attempting to get the win 98 machine to ping the win XP successfully as the other direction (XP-98se) is fine. Additionally XP computer will not ping itself. Then I will move on to file/print sharing issues and then internet sharing...I don't mind taking baby steps as long as I step quickly:^).
HP with XP
IP Address 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway BlankEmach with 98SE
IP Address 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway blank

Hi
sorry i think i miss read stuff my mistake. doh 1 of them days.you have dialup (56k? or dsl? doesnt matter) up on the hp, and having put in the LNE100 nic connected this to the switch/hub then win98 pcs to share the dial up on the local area network.
dialup - HP -hub=======win98 pcs
the light went on when u mentioned dial up!
this is ics 'internet connect sharing'
you need to set up a ics server on the hp
and client on the win98 pcs.Heres a run through on practically networked, for the hp pc, manually set up;
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/serverdialup.htm
win98 client setup (they can have ipaddresses automatically assigned to them by the xp ics server or static)follow this page and decide auto or manual ip address click relevant yellow button at base of this page (lol aweful web page design)
id go for manual (static) may be quicker to connect to net,http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ics/icsclient.htm
you need to bridge the network, follow the instructions on bridging sorry i cant find better pics.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networkbridge.htm
(note the ics wizard works but isnt obvious whats its done etc. hence use it as last resort imo)
hope this is it!
regards

I finally accomplished file sharing on the two computers! Still doesn't want to ping properly though...
However the next step was Print sharing (I need to find my drivers) and internet sharing which you have helped me with above. I have not completed the task yet; however I will let you know the result!
Thanks a million for the info.
