If you have the cable plugged into a switch then it can only be one of 3 things:

1) a bad cable
2) a bad NIC on the PC
3) a bad switch, or port on the switch

I'd start troubleshooting the cable itself. Get one you know works properly and see if that doesn't work. If not, then take a look at the NIC on the PC.

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the captain of my soul.

Make sure you have installed network card driver too, and check whether it works well. Usually if it works well, you can ping (loopback IP) in command prompt.

C:\Documents and Settings\ivan>ping

Pinging with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

In addition, this is an example of using ping to trouble network problem. Hope this helps.

How are you connecting a cable to a wireless adapter?

its seems to be a bad cable. Or perhaps something wrong with the port. Check them both
