Hi,
I have 3 windows 2000 proffessional machines, all talking happily to each other, connected to a router which dishes out internet happily. However, i also have a single XP proffessional machine (which im in love with so no chance of OS change) which will happily talk to the router and has as much internet access as the win 2k machines. However this WinXP Pro machine will see win2k machines, but will not access them, and i recieve "Access Denied" in typical microsoft style. Usernames are the same, passwords are null, windows firewall is disabled, norton is allowing connections, and theryre is no difference between the XP and 2k machines apart from the OS. they are basically identical apart from the processor speed. I know that the network card works, as im using the internet on this pc now, and a win2k laptop going into a separate card through crossover talks to this XP machine happily, and using a bridge can access the net.
No hardware is faulty and no software is faulty. Whats up?

You have to give the XP computer permission to access the 2K computers and vice-versa, and I'm pretty sure you will have to assign passwords all around. MS security does not like un-passworded computers accessing other NT types. At least that's where I'd start...
HTH

xp does not play nice with other OS. I would recomend a flash drive for file transfer or upgrading the 200 to xp

Win XP and 2K really should be used in Domains with Active Directory. That's the way the security was designed for and works much better that way. Using them without either, while you can make them work, is more a pain in the butt than anything else. All your T's must be crossed and I's dotted or it won't work right.

We use both OS's at work without problems, but we also have a Domain and Active Directory set up. At home I have 2 XP Pro's and a 98, and getting them to talk to each other is a pain, but it is a peer to peer here. Not worth the hassle...

Hm i considered the flash drive option myself but running up and downstairs isnt for a potato like me. : /
Passwordings not really sn option cus i dont really want other people using my account for other reasons, and the rest of my family needs it pretty simply (I have on of those dads that is an explicit believe in not straffing on any FPS game ever. Not surprisingly he hasnt completed doom 2 in 5 years yet. : /

I've used both in the same workgroup here at home without any trouble. My basic setup included ICS (I'm too cheap to waste $ on a router when I can get Zone Alarm for free) and usernames/passwords on all PC's. I used the exact same username/password combination on all PC's and made sure that that account was a member of the administrators group on each respective PC.
In a small home environment I statically assign the TCP/IP information and ensure all PC's are in the same workgroup.
If your XP and 2k machines aren't connecting properly then you've missed something and should go back through the setup procedure on the XP machine again and double check everything....including the workgroup name.
