Hi
Currently i have 2 pc's 1 runs xp the other 98. i access the net with my xp using a dialup connection. Both computers are connected together with a crossover cable and i use internet connection sharing to access the internet from the 98 pc.Everything works fine and i can share files etc. between computers. My printer is connected to the 98 pc and there are no problems printing from the xp pc or the 98 pc.
Now im getting DSL am I correct in assuming that all I need is a router and to connect each pc to the router with a straight through cable? then connect the router to the DSL modem. Will everything still work the same ie. file sharing and printing?
I guess I wont need internet connection sharing?
Thank you

If you have a second NIC in your current gateway, then you could just keep the setup you have and connect the first computer directly to the DSL.

Otherwise, yes, such a network is known as a 'star' network - the DSL connects to a central access point, in this case a router. Each computer then individually connects to the router through its own length of cable (straight-through cat5).

File and print sharing should still work, if you set it up correctly (which is even easier than setting up ICS, which you won't need anymore).

thanks BlueRaja

I have only 1 NIC in each computer so hopefully I'll get the setup right and everything will be ok

Thanks again

If you are able to connect your gateway computer to your dsl modem through a USB port you dont need and extra NIC card.
