Hiya, im having aproblem with my windows 98 se machine, using the second ethernet, one is built into the mother board, and the other is in a pci slot, im trying to get my windows xp machine as the host, and make the se machine connect through the xp machine. Im not using and routers, or hubs, just direct connecting em, each computer has an onbaord ethernet, and a pci ehternet.

Ok when i plug my cable modem directly into the 98's pci ethernet card, it wont let me on the internet, but still lights up, im guessing that mostly the 98 machine doesnt want to use the pci ethernetcard? i dont want to use the onbaord one, casue the dumb case i got for it doesnt have a hole for the ethernet one :/, the xp machine when i try to use the pci card slot to connect to the internet it wont let me, but plug it into the onboard one, and it does fine.

So is there like a procedure or something that i need to do so that it will use the pci ethernet card to connect to the host computer, or even the internet? Thnx for your help, and hope i provided enough information.

I know now that it is the windows 98 machine, i cant conenct to the internet on it, after three reformat/reinstalls still nothing.

But one thing, is that the windows xp machine cannot connect to the internet through the second ethernet port, why is that? I think thats also whats the matter with my win 98 machine.

I ran thought and there is no gateway, or dns along with it when i connect it to my cable modem, althought the lights still blink, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Should i just upgrade to xp mabey? would that most likely fix it?

Ok, so i got the win xp recovered from my old computer that messed up, i think the motherboard got like something knocked out, anyway, when i try to start the fresh xp install on a comp i made, it stops at mup.sys, I know so far that it is something to do with the protection that the computer has in system.sav file, which saves all my hardware, and if i change the hardware, it says screw off i wont start. Now im getting real pissed off at windows, i have 4 hard drives, win98 mostly and one winxp one.
Only one hard drive works, and on that hard drive, the network will not work whatsoever.

Now if i can either get some info on how to fix my network, (i think it has something to do with how windows handles ethernet, cause on my xp machine i can connect to internet on ethernet card 1 ,which is onboard, but not on card #2 which i installed after, if anyone can tell me why this is im sure i can find a fix for it,)
or on how to disable the hardware protection on the xp hard drive (note: tryed renaming the file, to old and leavin it blank, tryed to get it to work on this machine by replacing its system.sav file with the one from this one, which i got up to the agp440 file freeze, which also sux)

I just cant help but feel so screwed, its so annoying having to deal with this kinda crap, and im sure its an easy fix for the network thing.

Also on the 98 machine, i formatted/reinstalled about 4 times and it didnt do a thing. Before i was able to use it to get on the internet, i remember all i did was restore it, install the ethernet card, and it worked right there, no configuring or anything, seems everytime i move i go into a few weeks to where my computer doesnt like me.
