Hi,

I'm a beginner (real beginner!) and I have 3 pc's running under windows 98 SE and I would like to know how to configure them so I can share files, print on another etc. ?

I bought a simple ethernet 10/100 card for each of them that I connect with straight rj45 cables to a simple 8 port switch.

What next ?

Thanks

You'll have to make sure that they all belong to same "workgrou" (default is WORKGROUP, but you can use anything you want, so long as all three are the same workgroup name). And make sure that each computer has a unique name also.

Nothing changed...
I did the IP adress thing for the ethernet cards cards (192.168.0.1 / x.x.0.2 / x.x.0.3) though.

First you have to install Client for Microsoft Networking on all 3 machines; in Win98 it's installed through the Networking desktop icon.

It isn't enough just to assign local area network IP addresses to 3 PCs on a hub. To use TCP/IP addressing you need what's called a DHCP server hosting the connection. That's special software found in a router or there's a basic version inside Windows 98SE and up called Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ICS isn't enabled by default; you have to install it on a "host PC" from the WinDoze disc. Type the phrase into your Windows Help and follow the instructions for running the setup wizard.

And I believe the ICS host PC has to be on the input side of the hub, meaning if you want to connect to the Internet, too, you'll have to install a 2nd NIC in that machine and connect that to your cable/DSL modem.

To just connect 3 PCs you don't really need TCP/IP; all you need is to install IPX/SPX networking protocol to all three machines and assign them unique Computer names and a common Workgroup name under the Network Identification tab.

I never understood why peoploe would use IPX/SPX in a workgroup not using Novell..Is there a specific reason for this, because i thought i was not necessary in a microsoft environment..

Orion, if the ip addresses are statically assigned, the dhcp is not needed.
