I have a Microsoft Broadband Router. I ran the network install utility on three computers, Desktop 1, Desktop 2 and Laptop. All 3 are connected to the router, which is connected to a cable modem. The install routine created a floppy disk of network settings. The initial install was on Desktop 1 and the floppy was used to move the settings to Desktop 2 and Laptop.
Desktop 1 works fine. It can access files on Dekstop 2 and access the Internet. An icon for Laptop does not show up in the "Home" network.
Desktop 2 can access files on Desktop 1. Laptop shows up as an icon in the "Home" network but an error occurs when trying to access files on Laptop. Also, sometimes Desktop 2 gets a red X by the Internet connection and cannot access the web. I reinstall the networking software and reboot and everything works fine again. This happens about every 2 weeks or so. I have both a virus scanner and a personal firewall on all of the machines. When Desktop 2 cannot access the Internet, it can still access Desktop 1, so I know it is not a cable issue.
Laptop can see icons for both Desktop 1 and Desktop 2 but cannot access files on either machine. Laptop can get on the Internet just fine, although a MSN login screen always pops up. I simply close the login screen, click refresh, and after that I can surf the web just fine.
Does anyone have any things I might try to get these machines to talk to each other correctly? All three are running Windows XP Service Pack 1.
Thank you

XP Home has SO many networking problems that I would recommend upgrading to Pro.
I know this is not a good option, but MS crippled XP Home for networking so badly that it's almost impossible to use reliably.
