Ok..hope someone can help me. I need to network 3 computers..2 with 98se and 1 with ME. I understand that I need a router but can someone tell me how to connect the wires.

The only way I can think about it is to connect the router to one computer and then have the other 2 computers connect directly to the router in the front.

Is this right or is there another way?

I currently have one but it is used with a broadband internet and the cable is connected to the back and the computers to the front. The other network is for dial up and I am not sure.

Thanks,
Melissa

There is a lot of confusion here.

First what type connection do you have? Broadband or dialup?

What brand/model of router it is?

If you have broadband connection, the DSL or Cable Modem will connect to wan port of the router, and other ports are for computers.

The computers have dial up connections (AOL) and we have not purchased the router yet.

I was confused also..I know what to do with broadband but not dial up.

Thanks in advance, Melissa

A buddy of mine set up dial-up networking
via AOL somehow. What I mean is that all
could dial up via AOL indepedantly and
use AOL to netowkr the computers. Of course
this was done at the costomers request.
My thought AOL SXA 8) Wy use the dial-up
if you have broadband? Unless you have
to dial directly into a customers box, then
you dont need AOL for that either just a
modem. I think you need to set down and
think about what you actually need and want
and then come back.

I was just saying that "I" have a broadband connection but I am doing this for a relative.

They have three computers and want to be able to access files on each of the computers. This is why I call it networking. I have not bought a router for them but want to find out exactly what would be needed. The computers do have ethernet cards in order to network but I just wanted someone to guide me.

Thanks, Melissa

You donīt need a router. A hub will do just fine. Connect all three comp to the hub. Activate ICS, and set up tcp/ip as follows. Comp 1 192.168.0.1 Comp2 192.168.0.2 Comp3 192.168.0.3. Netmask 255.255.255.0. If comp1 has the modem set gateway as 192.168.0.1 in comp2 and 3.

Good Luck
