Hi.........what a headache this has been....

I am having trouble networking 2 xp pro machines with crossover cable.

Setup:
Host PC - ASUS 266E mb/ 1.1 gig duron proc.
512 mb ddr ram, 40 gig hd.
D-link NIC (internet incoming)
Link/sys NIC (out to client)
Crossover cable used

Client PC-ECS K7 mb w/ athlon xp2200/512
DDR ram, 2 40 gig hd's
onboard LAN connection.

Problem: Using the host I ran network connection wizard. Then ran same on client. Both are running xp pro w/ sp1. I am using a broadband sympatico modem. The client fails to read host or have any internet connection. I have even purchased all new nic cards for the host and still nothing. I have installed all necessary software for networking from the xp disk on both pc's. I did have another client on the same host previously by running the network wizard and after a couple tries we were up and running aok. I've tried running network wizard 20 times and still nothing.

Here's the catch: If I hook a usb network adapter in the host and hook crossover from usb to client, run network wizard on both, and POW, up and running everytime with no problems. thing is....it bothers me that I can get it working with the usb adapter and not NIC cards.

All NIC cards have been tested and working fine...the network wizard just won't set things up between machines with them and i have to revert back to the USB adapter.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

Can you get the host computer working by itself with the broadband modem and internet via cat 5? If so forget all the stupid xp wizzard crap.

After it's working goto your network settings and find the card with your incoming connection and enable share internet connection under advanced properties. after that goto the other computer and setup network connections for the onboard lan. Allow it to obtain ip addy automatically under tcp/ip and it should be ready to go. Then open your browser and set it up under Tools/ Internet Options / Connections Lan settings obtain automatically. I had broadband at one time shared this way. Now i'm sharing dial up for now on 5 plus pc's with a switch. I only use internet on one computer at a time though for obvious reasons.

Thanks Chad

I had tried this previously, but tried again. Beforehand i uninstalled all connections on both pc's. Then set up the broadband sympatico connection(WAN miniport). Internet works fine and always has on host. Shared the card on the host with the incoming internet connection. Went to client....all settings you mentioned already set. Still no internet on client. however...i can now see the host from the client when I go to "view workgroup computers". I cannot access it though. When I try and repair connection from client I get "failed to renew IP address" When I try and access host from client I can see it but get "network path not found" error.

Thanks for the help so far....any other ideas?

Paul
