What is the model number of the D-link router so we can see exactly what it's capabilities are. Please also clarify that you want to network three PCs. Two wired and one wireless.
You want to share the internet connection as well as access shared files on each PC? You may need more hardware to accomplish what you want.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Thanks Richard.

It is a D-Link DSL-G604T i am using and yes i would like to share the internet connection from the main PC and its files with the other PC upstairs and the wireless laptop. I am using AOL Silver Broadband on the main PC which AOL do not offer support for but it is possible to run AOL Silver over a network they have told me. Please help me its driving me mad now.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Use the "Alert Me" button in future to let me know you need more help. See top right hand corner of my response?
Now as to configuring your system:
You need to connect the ADSL line to the appropriate router/modem port. Then you need a short cat5 patch cable to connect your main PC to one of the 4 available ethernet ports.
You have a longer cat5 patch cable to connect the upstairs PC to a second port.

In each PC you need to configure the network connection TCP/IP protocol to "Obtain IP Automatically" Read your router instruction manual. It will tell you how to log into the router to configure it. Usually you do this by starting up your web browser in your direct connected PC and go to ip 192.168.*.* as per the user manual. Log in using the default admin user name and password.
You may need to manually set the parameters for your ADSL connection. You may also need to enable the wireless part of your network and also set security so that wireless acess is restricted to only allow connection by correct password. Otherwise anyone within transmitting range could use your internet and access shared resources in your lan.

If you need guidance on adjusting settings then hit the alert me button or shoot me an email.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

I also dont understand how i get my other PC upstairs to connect to AOL though the main PC downstairs and use the DSL modem to dial in.

Thanks for this.

Each router is a bit different in the way it needs to be configured. You will need to read the operators manual to work out how to log in to the router. You may need to contact your ISP to obtain the necessary internet log-in details so that you can put them in the router settings. Plenty has been written elsewhere here about permissions for accessing shared resources/files etc.
