I have 2 computers I want to connect together. I am running XP HOME with a wireless connection and i want to connect a pc running win98 via cat5 cable. I have network cards installed in both but the lights are not on. They are installed correctly and are working in device manager. I've read the other post and have tried to set up ip's but Its not working and I'm confused. Can someone give me step by step instructions? Thanks.

If the lights are not on for the network cards, then that means that you are using a bad cable, or a regular cable instead of crossover. Try looking at that first, then see if that fixes your problem. Have to look at Layer 1 first.

Use a crossover cable. If you're not sure what this is, then you probably don't have one.

Whenever connecting host to host, you need a crossover cable as opposed to a straight cable.

Straight : TX talks to TX

TX - TX
RX - RX

Crossover : TX talks to RX

TX \/ TX
RX /\ RX

Friends don't let friends drive stock..
