Hi. I have 2 PCs, one running Windows '98, the other ME. I have connected the two with a cross over cable, and they borh have a network card. The '98 PC can access the '98 PC with no problems. However, the '98 pc doesn't even appear as part of the network and as such cannot be accessed by the ME machine.

The connection was made for file sharing but predominantly so that both PCs can use DSL connection at the same time, with the '98 machine as the host.

Any ideas???

Now, I take it you don't have a DSL router? if you don't, go buy one it will solve your problem.

DSL router ->cheap hub ->computer

You can buy a cheap hub for about 20$ now and buy 2 straight through cat 5 cables

computer 1 and 2 should be addressed 192.168.0.10 and the other .11 ??? maybe.

then try to ping one another...

Call me stupid.. I have no idea what I'm doing!!

Also thank you for the advice but I understood I shouldn't need a hub or router to connect two pcs

Honestly pal. Your best bet even though there is a possibility of networking 2 pcs with just cross over cables, is two bye a router 2 straight Paired RJ-45's, 2 NIC's
Email me at m.loyola@rogers.com for Instructions, and before you do that call yuor ISP and ask them to clear your Arch-Table. Or you know what that might even be the problem your Arch Table is'nt cleared, basically all that means is your internet connection is directed to only one pc...Get them to clear it Leave settings as is and restart both machines...It'll probably work
