Hi all,

Recently bought a new computer, using XP media center SP2... I am wanting to set up a network between this new computer and the old one, which is running on windows 98. I have a DSL-504 router and have been told that it is possible to set up a network through this.... I have 2 cables, one for each computer and both have access to the internet through this...

... Is there anyone out there who can help me get this network setup? I have general computer knowledge but know nothing of networks.

Thanks in advance

Hi Buddy,

To network both computers:

(1) Connect each PC to the switch port of the router using a LAN cable
(2) Configure both PCs' TCP/IP properties to obtain an IP address automatically
(3) Both these PCs should be able to access each other's files

To connect to Internet using the DSL-504, here is a bit of a problem. Normally, DSL Internet providers bundle the ADSL router (like the DSL-504) with their subscription package or at least a router with 1 LAN port. This router comes preconfigured when delivered to the client. What an end user normally does is connect his/her computer to the LAN port of this router. In some cases, end users buy another device which is called a broadband router or firewall and set this up in between the ADSL router and the local computers. Local computers are then connected LAN side of the broadband router or firewall. The WAN side to the ADSL router. So my advise is this:

(1) If you already have an existing DSL subscription, look at the manual which states "Information you will need from your ADSL service provider", then coordinate with your ISP to activate your Internet connection
(2) Once activated, be sure that NAT is enabled - you can find this under the Home tab of your configurator. This is needed to enable your 2 computers to access the web concurrently.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Joel
