I need to network 2 PCs with no router or hub.

The PC with the internet connection (what I want to share with the other one) has a 3com 3c905-tx nic and an efficient networks 3061 aDSL modem. The other PC has a 3com 3c905-tx nic.

How do I network the 2 together sharing the internet connection from machine #1 (running linux-mandrake 7.2) to the other machine #2 running win nt 4.0 without a router or a humb?

thanks much,

cabalist

You need a crossover cable to network them. As far as sharing the internet connection, it'll depend on whether the cable modem is on the NT or Linux box. You'll need to set up some type of proxty server/firewall and may need to masquerade the IP addresses so it appears that only one PC is using the connection.

Use the mandrake machine to act as a f/w-router personally prefer red-hat,, but use ipchains' masq function.

I am actually going to be running the latest version of Redhat on the machine with the aDSL connection that I want to share.

What exactly would i need to do to set it up to share its (aDSL-for which it uses an internal-but supported-pci modem) connection?

Thanks much,

cabalist

I found that this book (no, I'm not getting any $$ from it) - RedHat Linux 6 in Small Business, Sery and Harper - did a good job of walking me through this. You'll obviously set the second box to use the Linux box as the default gateway under TCP/IP. You might check the HOWTOs:

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/categories.html

on IP-masquerading and firewalls.

http://www.dslreports.com

which deals with 'most' DSL and sharing/networking issues may also have useful info? I have no experience with Linux, and don't know if the above site includes Linux; but it's still probably worth your time to browse around the various sections...

With Linux instead of doing ipchains rules based on Eth0 and Eth1 u would do them based on the interface identifier for Dsl card...
the internal box will need to use the redhat box as its default gateway.. one thing with red hat is the default is to no forward IP by default. there is a file u need to set 1 to instead of 0 i will post later that information got work to do..
