I have just built a new PC with AMD 1000 & Win ME on one and old 233 on the other. The older machine works fine and can see itself in my nework places, The new machine cannot even when settings are identical. I have downloaded & installed fix from MS, no go. & swapped cards around so network card is not on IRQ 12. No go. I am completely stumped by this Any ideas??
Thanks Ian.

First off, just because it's able to see itself doesnt mean its working (example: i can get a computer to see itself without a NIC)
follow these steps:
1. Install NetBEUI into both computers.
a. Right click on the Network Neighborhood icon.
b. Left click on Properties at the bottom of the menu.
c. Under the Configuration tab click on the add button
d. Click on Protocol then click on the Add button.
e. Click on Microsoft on the left box.
f. Then click on NetBEUI on the right box.
g. Then click on OK.2. Make sure the Primary Network logon is set to Client for Microsoft Networks.
3. Enable File and Printer Sharing.
a. Right click on the Network Neighborhood icon.
b. Left click on Properties at the bottom of the menu.
c. Press Add.
d. Select Service.
e. Press Add.
f. Select File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.
g. Click OK.
h. Click on the File and Print Sharing… button
i. Put a check mark in the files box if you want to allow others to access the files on this system.
j. Put a check mark in the printer box if you want to allow others to use the printer connected to this system.
4. On Identification tab, make sure that computer names are unique and the workgroup names and identical.5. Set Access Control to Share-level.
a. Right click on the Network Neighborhood icon.
b. Left click on Properties at the bottom of the menu.
c. Click on the Access Control tab.
d. Turn on Share-level access control by clicking on the radio button to the left of Share-level.
e. Click OK.
f. Restart the computer when it asks if you want to restart the computer so that the settings can take effect.
6. Check that the power to the hub is on.7. Check to ensure a good connection is being made between the Network Interface Card and the Hub.(if your not using a hub, you need a crossover cable)
If not:a. Is the Network Interface Card properly seated. Turn power off, remove the card and then reinstall the card.
b. Remove the cable connections and re-install the cables.8. Ensure that the Network Interface Card is in the bus-mastering slot. This is usually the uppermost PCI slot.
9. On the remote computer, share the hard drive/folders/files.
a. Double click on my computer.
b. Highlight the item (hard drive/folder/file) you want to share.
c. Right click the item.
d. Go to sharing…
e. Select Share as:
f. Enter a name that you want to share the item as.
g. Click apply.
h. Click OK.once this is all done, if you still can see the other computer, you need to find out if you can find it. right-click on My netwok places and select search for computer. type in the name and search.
if it fails to find the other system, i would suspect your problem is either:1:)driver for NIC not properly installed
2:)resource conflict
3:)faulty hardware
4:)hardware compatibility
