Depending on how you are actually networked, via serial cable, some type of usb connection, ethernet cable, etc, can make a difference in how you are setup. Generally you will want to make sure that both computers have the same "workgroup" name. Each computer, however, can have it's own specific name. For example, my "workgroup" name for my network is 'Home' and the name of my pc is desktop and the name of the laptop is..laptop. You can change this info under the network icon in your control panel.

The most basic thing:

*Install TCP/IP(and you may need IPX/SPX for SMB) for each computer.
*Set one computer's IP address to "192.168.1.1" and the other's to "192.168.1.2".
*Set both netmasks to "255.255.255.0".
*Set the workgroup to the same thing
*Set the computer name to something different
*Restart

Unless I forgot something, that should let you play multiplayer games, probably share files/printers, etc... You won't be able route to any WAN, however.

If you want to setup a router(software or otherwise) for internet access, its a little more complicated, and depends on the setup you have.

If you're connecting the computers directly (i.e. without a switch or hub) you'll need a crossover cat5 cable between them.
