Hi there I may be able to help!!
What i have always done when connecting XP and 98SE is as follows:1. Install Internet Connection Sharing Software on the machine connected to the internet!! (ICS is pre-installed on XP (use network set up wizard) or can be found under internet tools as an optional extra on the win98se cdrom)
n.b. I have always found 98se internet sharing more reliable than Xp for some reason, it might be just me!!
Make sure that both pcs have unique names and the same workgroup.2. Make sure that file/print sharing are installed on both machines.
3. Ensure you have Netbeui installed for the network card on your ICS machine and for the internet connection.
4. I personally always set my Tcp/ip up as follows:
PC1 (ICS): IP: 192.168.0.1 and
my Subnet to: 255.255.255.0
PC2 (client): Do not specify an ip!5. Switch off both machines, then reboot only the Pc with ICS, once it is fully loaded and has stopped thinking, start up the client!!
6. **CLIENT ONLY** Remove all internet connections from Internet Explorer properties, set lan settings to automaticly detect settings!!
And thats it!!
In theory, the client should ask the ICS machine's Dhcp for ip and subnet information on start up! then you should have it all up and running!!
There is alot of should's in the above but this config has always and continues to work for me!! I use 98 for ICS and XP as client with no trouble!!I have nearly finished writing a tutorial about this subject, I will try to complete it tonight, if you have trouble, email me richard@silverhazemusic.co.uk and ill send it to you!!
All the best!!
Rich

thanks again
