Network woes

Hi, I need some help. Once upon a time I had two computers running win98; one original and one SE. They were linked with a simple ethernet network for exchanging files. Then I bought a new computer with win2000pro and wanted to link it into the network. I can now ping all three computers from each other. Of the original two, call them A and B, A can still talk happily to B and can also read and write to the new machine C. When B opens the network neighbourhood all three computers appear on the screen but when B tries to contact A it gets the following message: "A is not accessible. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request" When B tries to contact C a window pops up asking for a password. It rejects every password that has ever been used by the workgroup. When C is asked about its neighbourhood computers it displays all three and can access B without any problems but when asked to look at the drives in A, returns the message "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation" At first I tee'd the new machine into the coax but following suggestions bought new ethernet cards, a D-Link switch and changed to twisted pair lines to exploit the built-in ethernet in the new machine. I have changed the name of the workgroup, specified the ports, switched the lines, cannot remember all the things I have tried. I have been driven nearly insane in my efforts to get these three machines linked, and am on the point of dumping win2000 altogether and going back to win98. Can someone please help. Regards Peter
