Recently bought a new desktop with XP. I'm looking for the easiest and cheapest way to get files from my old desktop running Win98 to the new one.
I've heard software like PC Mover are not the best. What other options do I have?
Thanks!
Ryan

A physical connection between the two is the quickest and simplest if you don't have a network configured.
Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

You could use a direct cable connection through the printer port, if bolth computers have an old fashion printer port (eg. LPT1). The only thing you need to do this is a direct printer connection cable (DB-25 Male-Male). When you get the cable, look up Direct Cable Connection in the Windows Help Center on your Windows XP computer for instructuons to set it up. Thats what I did when I got a new computer and needed to transfer files between the two. This is the cheapest way to network two computers together, as it is much faster than a serial connection.

#2 - - "a direct printer connection cable"
Transfers via the LPT port require a crossover cable, Not a regular 'straight' cable (aka 'Laplink' or 'parallel file transfer' cables)
Likewise for connecting via the Serial ports (null-modem cable)
For a true network connection (NIC to NIC) a crossover RJ-45 cable may be needed (perhaps not in all cases)Slaving the old drive to the new system (as mentioned) shouldn't require the purchase of any new cables, just a bit of effort

OK, I'm a little confused on all these ports (LPT, serial, etc.).I don't think my new PC has an LPT1 port. It does include the following--Serial port (9 pin D-Sub, RS-232 interface). Parallel port (25 pin D-Sub, IEEE 1284 interface), among others.
All of this a little above my head. Does this info help you in determining which cable I might need to network my two PCs?

LPT = 'parallel'
COM = 'serial'
RJ45 = Network (CAT5, ethernet etc)
Anyhow - if you're not willing to slave the drive, and you don't have a Network Interface, then LPT is faster than serial

So do I need a crossover cable, or will a direct parallel cable suffice when connecting via the LPT port?Thanks again!
Ryan

you need what is sometimes referred to as a null modem cable (if I remember correctly)? In effect it's a parallel cable but two wires/conductors are crossed - so that input on one end is connected to the output at the other...; in other words a cross-over cable for a parallel port.

Now I'm confused...So is this not what I need? Sorry, I don't have it as a direct link:

10' FT. Cable Male-DB25 to Male-DB25
Thanks for the clarification,
Ryan

Direct connection.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

can i offer the easiest (not the fastest) if you have internet on both just email it to yourself. if you have high speed it's an option.
Cost=$0
