Hi,

I have been struggling to set up a network between my two XP machines (Stupid I know) The equipment I am using is:

Actiontec wireless modem/router.
2 Actiontec wireless adapters.

I have connected the router to one computer, does this computer also need an adapter for the network to run correctly?

I have run the network wizard on both computers, and when I go to 'view workgroup computers' on the downstairs computer (one with router/modem) Both computers are listed, however when I try to get into the upstairs computer I get this error:

http://www.stylishdesign.co.uk/error.jpg

What settings must I change for me to be able to get into the upstairs computer from downstairs? Also, when I go to the properties of the upstairs computer in my network places on the downstairs computer, it just syas: "The server UPSTAIRS could not be found on the network"

Please help me, I know this is probably very easy, and I have overlooked something stupidly simple.

Many thanks,
Kieran.

My first thought when I read this is of course name resolution, so let's go with that. Have you attempted to connect to the other computer by IP address? use start, Run and type \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx whatever the address of the other computer is. Let us know if that allows you to browse files on the other computer

It was not found :(

On my downstairs computer I can see the upstairs computer, but cannot browse it, on the upstairs computer I can't even see the downstaris one.

Any more ideas??

Kieran.

Okay. First get to a command prompt (Start menu, 'run', type 'cmd') on both computers. type 'ipconfig' at the c:\ and write down the IP address for each computer that this command returns. This is so you don't forget when you try and ping over the network.

Make sure that the IP addresses are in one of the reserved private network address ranges. The most common is 192.168.x.x with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. If either machine has an IP address of 169.254.x.x that means it didn't find a DHCP server to automatically supply the IP address. If that's the case then you need to make sure your router's DHCP service is operating properly and that you are connected to the LAN. My Wireless access point and Laptop require that I select the AP in the configuration utility. You may need to manually set your wireless adapter to connect to the AP. (And no, you don't need to connect your computer to the AP and to the wireless adapter. Assuming you mean you plugged into the port on the AP...)

If the DHCP doesn't work, check the IP setting using the Admin webpage for your router to check it's IP address. Again, should be 192.168.x.x and manually set the IP addresses of the two computers to something in the 192.168.x.x network.

Example:
Router IP: 192.168.8.1
Computer 1 IP should be: 192.168.8.x
Computer 2 IP should be: 192.168.8.x

Manually configure the IP address by selecting the properties for My Network Place and the the properties for your LAN connection. Finally, click TCP/IP and select Properties.

This should fix you up, unless there's another problem altogether... Hope that does it!
