Hello. I am having very weird network issues with my home-based network setup. The setup that I use is, I plug my Sympatico SpeedStream DSL modem to my Dlink 604 router in the WAN port via Ethernet. Next, I plug my computer, Xbox 360, other computer, etc. into the 4 ports on my router. Now, it should all work fine. I open IE and it's can't find websites.

I have loged on my router (192.168.0.#) and tried eveything I could think of, and it still won't work. I tried running the wizard and, when I get to where the router detects my Internet connection, it sets it ass PPPoE. I go back and set it as Dynamic ISP, I clone the MAC Address, but nothing works. I am positive the Internet IS working through that network setup, but it won't allow me to go online and SN and all the other Internet-based programs.

Now, on a side note, this has happened in the past and I have resolved the issue numerious times, but right now, I am really confused as to why it won't work. For fun, I ran the Internet Connectivity Wizard and, apparently my DNS is unable to resolve IP addresses. Could this be what is causing the issue?

I hope I have supplied enough detailed information about this issue. But note that I have resolved this usse without buying anything or reinstalling my computer.

Thank you and have a nice day.

If you plug a pc directly into the modem and not use the router, does the internet work? Also, does your ISP use DHCP, or Static IP addressing?

That is how I am connected to the Internet right now. My pc is connected directly into the DSL modem, but I need to use my username and password. Also, I am not sure if my ISP uses DHCP or Static.

I think the problem is either with the DSL modem or the router because, whenI connect my DSL modem to the WAN port of hte router and try to ping the router, I can't ping it.

when you use DSL you get ip address from your ISP DHCP server unless you are paying more money to get static ip address.
,now on router you can have dhcp or static IP address if you go with dhcp you dont have to worry when you turn on your systems it will get ip address automatically from DHCP router,if you go with static then you need to give ip address manually to all PCs with same subnet and default gateway will be your router ip address.

Dont give up

It sounds like your router and pc address schemes are incorrect. The router should automatically get its external address from the ISP DHCP server through the modem. Then internally, your router should have a 192.168.x.x address (most likely) and your pc should also have a 192.168.x.x address. The easiest thing to do is setup the router to provide DHCP addresses to your machines, then on the machine, set the network card to automatically obtain an ip address and dns address. If your ISP were to give you a static ip, you would have to enter that static information into your router for the external configuration.

Hope that helps.

How would I set up my Dlink 604 router to provide DHCP addresses? Alos, when I obtain both IP and DNS servers automatically, I get a weird IP address which is not mine. Could you put steps on how to setup the router for DHCP addresses? Thanks.

With a PPoE setup, you have to put the log-in information in the router's setup page.

It will ask you for the main account name and the password. Put that in the router's setup page. save and exit. You may have to reboot the computer to get your DHCP address.

Hey. Somethings are working and somethings are not. I did what the setup said, hit the DHCP Renew button and I got my ip, 192.168.2.10 Now, I opened up my Network Connections, right-clicked on the LAN network, hit Properties, clicked on Internet Protocol and hit Properties and I filled in what it gave me:

IP: 192.168.2.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1

It only game me one DNS Server: 192.168.2.1

After that was done, I hit Ok, it aquired the network addresses smoothly and fast. For fun, I clicked on Start, Run..., typed "cmd", typed "ipconfig /all" and this is what it looks like:

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.10
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : fe80::211:11ff:fe43:104d%6
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1

I opened a new I.E window. Now, instead of just going to the Page Could Not Be Displayed window, it kept trying to reach the site. So I feel that, it is trying to connect to the Internet, but it's not. That is the main issue that should be resolved.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

In Internet Explorer go to your Lan settings and make sure that there is NO check mark on the Autodetect Proxy page.

There is no check marks under the LAN settings. Also, when I try to connect to my router, I can't log into it because I changed my ip from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.2.10. Don't ask why that would cause it, but it did.

The address for the router should be 192.168.2.1 if your above post regarding your ipconfig /all is correct. You should be able to ping that address as well. Your router should have a WAN side setup and a LAN side setup. The WAN side should be configured to whatever your ISP gave you information wise. Your LAN side it sounds like is correctly setup judging from your above post. Once this is done try narrowing down your issue. Try pinging the router from your pc, if that works, then that is fine. Next try pinging a web address like www.google.com If it resolves the IP address, then you know DNS is working, if it doesn't then either your DNS information is incorrect, or your internet is down. To decide which it is, try pinging 64.233.161.147 If it returns replies, then your dns information is incorrect. If it still doesn't do anything, then your internet either isn't configured correctly between the router and the modem, or the modem is bad. It might be time to give your ISP Tech support a call.
