I have 2 computers i'm trying network, both using a 10/100 netwrok adapter on both. The light comes up on both, i've run the network setup disk on both pc's and the xp computer detects the netork at 100mbps and everything seems fine on the xp computer. But the win 98 computer can't see anything when you go to network neighbourhood it can't even see itself and when you click on network it says it isn't accessible, the xp computer also can't access the win 98 one although it is shown upon clicking on it says it isn't accessible. Both computers are sharing something, i've even tried manually installing protocols on both but it doesn't work.

Try installing IPX/SPX Protocols on the Win 98. It should probably work then. If not, then it's probably something different.

Don't bother installing IPX. Novell don't use it anymore and niether should you. are you connecting the PC's directly together with a single cable. if you are is it a crossover?

Crossover, single cables don't work at all, my network lights don't even turn on using a standard cat5e cable.

start>run>command.exe to open a dos box
ipconfig to show your TCP/IP settings
ping 127.0.0.1 as reply means your cards probably ok
ping ipaddressofxpmachine shows IP connectivity to the xp machine (or not)
are you sure the cable works?
do you have anything like Zonealarm install
You have a connection light on your card so your cables probably ok but when you try to access or ping the xp machine you should get a flashing light on the card also.
to check your IP settings right click network neigberhood and choos properties and then tcpip

All there is in that list is TCP/IP, IPSX, Client for microsoft networks, my network adapter and sharing files and printers. btw which protocols should I be using to link xp and win 98. But I have used the win xp network setup on both computers, and checked the option for a network without internet (which it is).

Alright, I got a little bit further, I can ping each computers name on the network as well as there ip address, the win XP computer can now access all of the win 98's shared folders etc. but the win 98 computer still can't see the win xp computer on the network, it can't even see itself!

When networking XP and 98, 98 puts a drag on the network. Look in the XP machine, make sure it does not say Internet Sharing installed. Are both computers on the same Workgoup?

Isn't XP fun?
I was working a similar issue the other last night with a customer. 98se and XP Pro... what a mess...

First of all, are you using a router or Hub/switch? The Router will act as a gateway for the XP to 98se interface. Just make sure your "firewall" is not enabled in XP. The 98 machine, if you make ANY network changes on it, then the XP machine MUST be rebooted. XP doesn't like to let old setting go on the 98 machines. Not until you reset them...

Also, you said you can see the 98 machine from the xp one, but not the xp from the 98 machine. Can the 98 machine surf the web? If your running a router set, make sure the 98 machines port is not limited or blocked. But I don't think that's it. Try this...

Remove all the protocals and NIC card setups from your 98 machines Network Properties menu. Then remove the NIC from the system menu and reboot. Make sure your have the XP machine powered down when you do this. Once you've come back up on the 98 machine, it should go thru the standard "found new hardware" stuff and install the NIC. Then go back into Network properties and reload your setup. You'll have to reset everything once again and at that time, once the 98 machine is up, you should first see yourself after about 1-3 minutes of running on the network. The reason it takes so long is that if you have "browse master" set for "automatic" it has to negotiate with the network on who's the fastest. If you look at your router or hub you may notice the network lights for the xp machine are still on. Even though the xp machine is powered down, it can still allow the NIC power for the Wake on Lan access. So your 98 machine will negotiate for the "front seat" basically. I've also taken the "browse master" option, this is found in the network properties, then select/highlight "file and print sharing" and select properties for that, and set browse master to "disable".

One last option, use static IP addresses vs dynamic or automatic IP assignment from the router.

One more thing, try going to network, select find computers, type in the name of the xp machine and see if you can find it. But seriously, you need to disable the firewall option in the LAN side of the XP machine. This is found easiest in the Help menu on the xp machine...

good luck mate
Randy...

I don't think you need novel stuff just IP protocol.

I would use the IP of each machine to contact each. Be sure to look into local security to allow shares to 98. Use help and support pages in XP for help.
