Today I began to set up my network.. I installed a D-Link DFE-530TX+ Fast Ethernet Adapter in each computer(there are 2), and installed all the drivers. One is running Win98SE, and the other is running the first edition. I created a workgroup on the SE machine, and I can't logon to it from either PC. In Network Neighborhood, all I can see is myself. Do I need to upgrade to another operating system designed for networking? The cable I bought is CAT5E, it doesn't say if it's crossover or whatnot. Please help!

Me thinks you'll be going to buy a crossover cable tommorrow.
You need a crossover cable or 2 regular cables connected to a hub/switch.

Plug and unplug the cable to see if the appropriate lights are coming on.

Greg, you need crossover cable if you are peer-to-peering.

compare the ends of your cable and see if you can tell if the wires are in the same order by color. If the order is different from one end to the other then it is a crossover cable.

This should help based on my setup of two PC's, one with an internet connection and a hub connecting the PC's.

For networking and dialup you will need two instances of TCP/IP running at least on the connected PC. One for the ISP supplied address that should be left unassigned by you and the other one with a private network number of your choice-one for each PC.

If you use a router as other folks might suggest then IP adresses will be handled differently.

To view in Network Neighborhood, I used Netbios for IPX/SPX.

Hope this helps.
