Comment:

One of my laptops with Win98se with wireless adaptor sees the Win XP server. Logs on the wireless router.

I have set the group name to mshome, and assigned an IP address 192.68.1.101 and Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 The server IP is 192.68.1.5

But when trying to access the software for our Orbitz Race Monitor AMB IT program, it cannot seem to find the server.

The software allows for me to enter the IP addresss of the server and a Port Number. We have tried 40000 and 50000 for the port number. The Wireless Adapter is a USB Port device. Do I need another Port Number to direct the software to look there versus the card port?

We have run the same software and cards on WIN XP laptops with no problems.

There is a WEP key used, however rhe Adapter Monitor sees the network signal and all seems okay there.

Can you ping the XP machine from the 98 machine?

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

No, I cannot ping from one to the other using both machines.

turn off your xp firewall and try pinging again.

Ports referred to are not physical ports but tcp/ip ports. 40000 and 50000 are not valid tcp/ip ports. They go a few hundred beyond 32,000. You have to be just guessing.

You need to know ACCURATELY what port the program is listening on at the server.

Admn says there is no firewall on the XP server.

Not certain of which port number it is.

How does one determnine that?

Wanderer,

ports 1-65535 are certainly all valid TCP ports (http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers). Furthermore, any application can theoretically use any of those ports.

49152-65535 are officially reserved for dynamic protocols, such as SIP, MGCP, FTP, dynamic NAT. However, there are some software vendors who do not follow this standardization.

AMP,

If you're not able to ping the destination machine, then you should investigate that cause further. double-check your IP addresses and net masks for any typos.

The easiest way to find out what ports the application/server requires is by consulting the software vendor.

I do not have access to the Wireless XP system except at the racetrack. And I do not have a wireless network here. I will fire up the laptop and double check the IP and Subnet Mask numbers here. Pretty certain they are correct, but I have made mistakes before like.

Had two other folks that are network savvy at the track looking at the numbers and the config, but neither could find the problem.

I will check it when I get back with the network at the next race event. Sure makes my life eaiser having the RMonitor running real time AMB race results, while I am announcing the race.

CMWGT you are absolutely right. What was I thinking? Now I have to go and figure out how I miscross referanced 32,xxx in my brain.

Amp the usual way you find the port used is one of a couple of ways. See if there is a inf file for the program. Sometimes they put the port number in there. Look at the programs startup parameters. Port number can be there.

But my favorite way is to call or lookup the program online to get its port number.

Just discovered I am unable to use the Share feature even though the File&Print Share are turned on in the network. Noticed the C Drive or the folder with the RMonitor are not shared.

Still the network issue is the first step.

Can you explain. I sent an email to the support folks at AMB IT E-Timing and Scoring asking where to locate that number.

I believe it is in the communications.cfg file where the IP address is.

Explain what? The tech support should be able to tell you the port number off the top of their heads. Did they tell you it was contained in the communications.cfg file for the program? Have you peeked at that file to see?

Where did you get the information that you needed a port number? Perhaps this is a goose chase?

You speak about an admin for the xp box. Why isn't this person figuring out why you don't have access network wise and fix it?

Tech support informs me the default Port number is 50000, that is the one we are using on both machines. He does not think the problem lies there.

Admin also said it was 50000. My question was when using a USB versus a card would that change the port number.

Admin worked for 30 minutes trying to get my machine to see the XP box. We use a 5-Mile Bridge Wireless system. However I was within 20 feet of the antenna and had 100% signal.

The Win98se box does not show the Sharing tab on properties of folders or drives, so it appears there is a network problem with that machine. It is set for file and print sharing, and I have recycled that option off and on, removed the client and tcp/ip and adapters and re-installed them all. Then set File and Print Sharing to on, but still do not see the Sharing option in the properties of the folders.

No. Your hardware has nothing to do with tcp/ip port numbers.

You don't need the 98 box sharing anything. Thats the wrong end. Its the xp box that needs to be sharing, if that is a requirement of the application.

FYI but once you enable sharing you have to SHARE something. Its not automatically done for you.

My suggestion would be to go to where the xp pc is and physically connect to the network. Get that working as well as the application. THEN go to the wireless bridge.

That is the same suggestion the other tech that works with us made. Connect with a hard wire, then work out the problems and move on to the wirless connection.

I will try that at the next event when we have all the system up and running together again.

Thanks

Just curious, did you mean 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.5? If you are using a Linksys router, their normal IP (gateway) is 192.168.1.1. Don't know if this would be an issue in this case.
