Network printer -> Shared from ...

I have several WinXP computers on a network with a HP Laserjet 4100. The printer has its own IP address, and when I install the printer software it asks for the IP and sets the printer up. Each computer can access the printer. However, after a while, the network printer (that was the default printer) is no longer available. It is replaced with the same printer (multiple times) shared through some of the other computers. I have tried taking the share off of the other computers, and if I reinstall the software for the printer the problem goes away for a while, but returns after a few days. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Have you tried giving the printer a static IP? It sounds like what ever is providing the DHCP is changeing the IP of the printer every few days. Also try adding some additional Protocols like netBIOS. Or just make sure you have file and printer sharing protocol running on all clients.

Hi, If your Network is set up with a Router and all PCs connected to it and also the Printer (not having the printer connecteds to a PC) The Printer should be set up as if it was another NODE on the Network. Painter MUST have a Static IP in order for Computers to find it in same place each time they try to print. When Printer's IP is "DHCPed" (is that a word?) the PC's will keep track of last place it found it giving you all those extra Icons for it. Frankie566

Alright thanks! Umm, I have one question. The network is DHCP enabled. Is there any way to give one thing a static IP? The network is about 20 or so computers and the place needs the DHCP ability.

Yes it is. Define DHCP Address range in ur DHCP Server / Router and assigne Fix IP reservation From your DHCP SERVER (windows or linux both can do that ) for a specific MAC ADD .Some home routers have that ability too to make a Reservation for IP for a specific MAC. I dont remember which one. You have to look into its details.
