hi,
i have just installed a network printer (using the printers LAN connection into my LAN switch) but when i select the "add printer" option, the printer doesn't appear as its own entity (host).Instead, it only appears as a share on the PC where it was originally shared from, via USB.
Should i be able to see the printer name in the list of printers when going to the Add Printer menu in XP? Or will it always appear as a share from another PC?
One other thing, when i installed the printer via LAN connection, it automatically created a printer icon and made that my default printer. In the properties there, the printer doesnt appear as shared. Should i share it there?
thanks

hi...
1st you share your printer in LAN. after that call your network pirinter attached computer from run command . go to run, fire //computername. that computer showz you shared files n folder in one window. thn you can double click of tht shared printer icon n install printer in that computer.
if its not accessbible thn off the firewall.its done.
good luck..
Jaan

so your saying that if i add the printer straight onto the LAN with its own static IP, it still won't show itself on the Add Printer menu in windows? I need to add it as a LAN printer, then share it? So basically it would still be shared off a single PC.
I wanted to avoid that, as the nearest PC to it physically is not-so-good spec. So i thought better than share (via usb to PC) i thought stick it straight onto the LAN and have all the PCs access it via the WORKGROUP.

How about adding a new port (TCP/IP) and setting the printer IP there, will that work on all the PCs?
