Comment: I have a Netgear router and Netgear Print Server 121 for use with my desktop and laptop. My internet connection is great. I am having a very hard time connecting my HP PSC 1600 all-in-one printer to my laptop via the server.(The server said it was compatible with my printer). When I try to use Windows "add a printer wizard" my printer's name is not on the list that you must choose from so it fails to install. I've tried to use the printer software in the wizard, but I get a message that I need a driver not available on the software. I have looked on the HP website for a driver, but to no avail. When I try to use my Netgear installation for the print server,it says there is no printer installed. (It is installed and functioning on my desktop). Is there something I may be doing wrong with the attempts to use the Netgear installation?

Reply: (edit)I don't think you need a print server with the "all in ones". Doesn't it have it's own cat5 jack in the machine? If it does, just connect that to a network jack, switch or router and give it it's own IP address through the inteface. With all in ones you can share the printer almost any way you want, see below for another way, but you'll never share the scanner. The scanner insists on it's own IP address and connecting it to a print server won't work as far as I know. I just tried one the other day. If the printer works on the another machine, share it from there and run \\IP_address of that machine on the server. You'll see the shared printer folder open. Drag and drop the printer that way.

Reply: (edit)I'm using a PS101 print server so this should be close. The easiest way to change an already installed printer to a network printer is to manually change the port to whatever you've called it using the netgear utility. start-printers-your allinone-properties-ports there should be a drop down list. Look for the name that you've assigned to the device and select it. Note: XP's firewall can cause problems! Turn it off temporarily if you can't find the print server.

Reply: (edit)Thanks much for the responses. I e-mailed HP shortly after submitting the note above & got a prompt reply. Because the HP 1610 was not on the XP drop down list, I was told that the driver for the Deskjet 550C was interchangeable and on the list. Instuctions were also included. I was pleasantly surprised. However, it was unfortunate because I had gotten so frustrated that I disconnected the print server & just connected my laptop to share with the desktop. The only benefit that the server provided was that I could use the printer without the desktop being turned on. I didn't know that when I first bought it...thought you HAD to use a print server. Oh well, live & learn. Thanks again for your help!
