We are having a similar problem. We have a small network with 1 win 2K machine and a couple of laptops running 98. I can see the laptops from the desktop but when you try it the other way, it asks for a password. I don't even have a password set up on the machine.

I don't think those questions are the same issue. Win 2000 sets security by default. The problem is the password you're looking for doesn't exist yet. On the 2000 machine go to "Start/Programs/Administrative tools/Computer Management". Then goto "System tools/Local Users and Groups/Users", right click on "Guests", click on "Properties", and take the check out of "Account is Disabled". "OK" out of the screens and test it.

Are all the machines Win95? Usually you get this error on a win9x and NT combo...

Depending on your network config, you may want to be cautious when enabling the guest account. It's basically opening your system wide open, if it's not behind a firewall or otherwise protected, you're a hacker's dream.

When the Win9x machine is asking for an IPC$ share, it basically trying to logon to the NT machine (or server) with that user name and password.

For example, suppose you logon to the win9x machine as username: John Password: Doe -- when connecting to shares, the NT machine either has no user, or it has a different password, for user "John." Simply create the user on the NT machine with the password "Doe" and you're all set. Or if they're win9x machines, make sure users exists in the same fashion.

Tweakui offers an autologin function, so if you are the only user but still want to log in, you can use this so you don't have to type in your username/password each time you boot.

Good luck!

at risk of repeating myself, on the 95/98s at a command prompt type:
NET CONFIG
this will tell you what your username is and what your workgroup is. it might not be what you expect. this is what gets passed to the nt share as authentication - ie i am username X of domain Y. the domain it offers is its workgroup.
so imagine this:
you build a pc , and during the install you input a username - AAA when asked but no password. the pc is configured so all users get the same settings. you won't see that windows login again. but you have got the primary login set to windows login. remember you won't see it. also the indentification in network properties is left as 'workgroup'.you are now logged into windows as user AAA domain WORKGROUP . you log onto the network as user BBB and verify on domain DOMAIN and run a login script or whatever.
try to map a drive and it asks for a password - having already decided you are AAA from WORKGROUP.
it should be passing over BBB of DOMAIN - a user who has already been passed as okay, and not ask for ipc$ passwords or share passwords.
