Can anyone tell me of a network problem that wouldn't be solved by a repair or clean install of windows or getting a new network card. Those are the two things a technician said would fix the problem but neither worked.

I don't think its the network or wire thats the problem because a friends laptop worked fine on it. But then so does my PC sometimes, and then just decides not to work for hours at a time. My internet is on a network in housing both provided by my university. Theres a router box thing at the end of our hall shared by 5 of us. I got a guy to come round and he tried swapping which socket mine was plugged into and his laptop worked OK too.

But I just dont get how it could be my pc, it's a brand new nforce 4 PC and I have a new network card and all updated drivers. What happens is that I lose the connection and the PC loses any network details it has like the IP address etc. If I look at network status it either shows only some of the network details or it has none and has noughts by the IP address....
Everyone else on my floor gets a connection.
Thanks for any suggestions.

So you are wired to the router right? If you connect directly to the router do you lose your connection like you do when in your room?

Ok none of that worked, the guy has no idea why it doesnt work except some crap about me using bittorrent and them blocking me for a while but the fact is his laptop worked.

can network problems be caused by a not too legitimate copy of windows? More specifically one without a proper key.
Been having some problems, see here http://www.computing.net/networking/wwwboard/forum/26749.html I'm away from home so I dont have my copy of windows and the key so i've have to do repair and clean installs with a copied version and a generated key

key has nothing to do with it.

you never addressed my question:
if you connect your laptop to the router directly does it fail?

that bittorent advice was not crap depending on your school's internet usage policy. but you read the policy didn't you? bet not :-)

You may wish to consider uninstalling any p2p sharing software and see if you stay connected.

The laptop works connected directly and non-directly.
Theres isn't a policy, i didnt eevn know what speed it was going to be. That wouldn't explain why it doesnt work i dont think because 2 peopls laptops worked on the connection so surely that means it wasnt blocked?

I had a brainwave that what could be happening is I maybe dont have a powerful enough PSU and the computer is shutting down different parts of itself randomely. Sometimes my mouse stops working and i have to start indicating the usb has failed or the onboard firewire or the card will stop working. So is it feasible that the same might happen with my network cards? even though they display as working fine in device manager?
I have a 300W PSU and an nforce motherboard with a athlon 64 3000 and 768 mb ram with a nvidia 6200 graphics card and i have a maxtor external drive plugged in most of the time.

Ok that wasnt it.
I think my motherboard is faulty, possibly caused by electricy surges in my accomodation (we've been having kettles and all sorts of lights and switches blow up)
It seems to have effected my onboard network card and some of my pci buses causing my new network card to be faulty. I installed a new card i got from the shop into another pci slot and its online. I'm gonna try claim for my motherboard.
Thanks everyone
