I currently have a network between 2 computers. a windows 98 and a win xp. when i'm on the win 98 i can controll the xp computer. i can also execute, edit, read files and all that good stuff.
but win xp acts like theres no network at all. it wont connect to the 98 computer in fact it will let me into the network connections to see all my connectons but the only networked drive is its own! i'm getting confused. does xp just not like 98? does it just plain refuse to network with it?

Hello Im having a problem networking my dads pc and my laptop. Niether one will talk to each other and even if i disable the firewalls and try to make a new connection it wont let me. Can someone help me please. Im trying to share files but it wont let me. Of course another theory commonly used in my mind is that the router wont allow it. I think I know how to fix the problem but i cant find the owners manual for the router.... i know i sound stupid but im not very computer smart. someone please help me.

Chris,
Are they on the same domain? What do you mean it won't let you share? I use the same configuration (PC and a laptop through a router) and mine works.

I'm sorry, not domain, but it's called "Workgroup." In XP you right click My Computer, then properties, then click Computer Name. Then look for workgroup. In 98, you can check the workgroup of a system from the Network aplet in Control Panel. Select the Identification tab, here the Workgroup name is displayed. Make sure they're the same.

Well im on Windows 2000 Professional and both computers are set to "HOME" as a domain, how do I get them to share folders after I do that? Like when I run the "Make A New Connection" I have the choices of Connect to a private network through the Internet, or Accept incoming connections, or Connect directly to another computer. And that is just about all that I can say about it because the other two are Dial up connections and Im on a wireless router, routing a cable modem.

Well, I'm on XP, but I'd assume it'd be similar to 2000. You find the folder that you want to share. Right click it, then click Sharing. On XP I check "Share this folder on the network" and then under that, give it a name. Then I go to My Network Places, and it'll be there. Should be similar, but I'm not sure. Good luck.

OK, i have selected share on the folders that i want to share but it still wont share them, they wont even show up in the "My Network Places", on either one

another thing that will wont do is allow permission, both computers wont read the other compter, do i need to deactivate both firewalls in order to do this?

No, niether computer will see the other, like my dads pc wont see my laptop and my laptop wont see my dads pc is there anything that i can do to add a computer because unless i do the other computer (laptop to pc or pc to laptop) wont be allowed permission to the shared file or folder.

Is there anyone out there who reads this that can help me with my problem, my computers will not see eachother, therefor i can not allow permission on either computer to view or for that matter access shared files or folders, can someone please help me with this issue.
