I have a router/modem with a wireless link to one XP machine and a wired link to another. Both machines can see the modem/router and access the internet. (Bothe use XP Home SP1).
The wireless machine can access the network and browse the shared folders/open files on the wired machine.
The wired machine cannot see the network however - selecting - 'view workgroup computers' ellicits no response - it does not even detect itself. It can successfully ping itself and the other computer. When I look at the computer name in system properties it is shown correctly. What I do notice is that the workgroup name is correct but 'greyed' out. Trying to 'explore' the network - Microsoft windows network - gives the message "Unable to browse the network the Network is not present or not started". Can anyone help ? I have followed all the Microsoft set up advice and scoured the web for similar problems but can't find anything. Many thanks

That greyed out workgroup name must be telling you something, but I don't know what. Here's a smattering of suggestions.
Try running the Setup a home or small office network Wizard on the wired PC again.
Make sure Computer Browser and other networking services are running (compare to the wireless PC).
Check in Events viewer (both security and system) for warnings or errors that may be good clues.
Consider upgrading to Service Pack 2 (it includes networking fixes).
Terry
