Ok Im at a loss yet again! I just got cable internet (roadrunner) and my issue is this: When it was installed the tech got my computer going (not an easy task I have vista); after about 30mins of trying everything we both could think of he called tech support and they had us unplug the cable modem and wireless router (Zyxel) then plug it all back in. And it worked! Not even thinking of my husbands computer I let the guy go without even trying his connection. So after messing around w/ his computer (the hp n3410) I did get it to work but in turn mine stopped working (could not get on the net). So then I went and disconnected everything again to try and reastablish the connection on my laptop and in turn got my connection back and lost his. Like I said Im at a total loss I get one back and loose the other and visa versa. All I want is both to work. The wireless signal is excellent on both computers but explorer is saying page cannot be displayed. Please help!

Start with the basics. Run ipconfig /all on the machine that isn't working and post it here.

What modem and router are being used?

It's not getting an IP address and the subnet mask is wrong. That IP is something that MS uses to show that the card isn't working or that there is no connection to the router.

Is the laptop wired or wireless. What's the IP address of the router?

Laptop is wireless
Where do you find the IP address for the router?

If you run ipconfig /all on the working machine, the default gateway will probably be the IP of the router.

I don't know what Zyxtel router defaults are.

"I did get it to work but in turn mine stopped working (could not get on the net)"

This only happens under a couple of circumstances.
1. cable from modem is plugged into a lan port not the wan port
2. router is set to bridge mode.

Compound this with this:
"DHCP Enabled: Yes
Autoconfig Enabled: Yes
Autoconfig IP Address: 169.254.144.13
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:
DNS Servers:"

Notice the no gateway entry or dns? But you are dhcp enabled. If you were connecting to the router and it was set as dhcp server you would not get the autoassigned address 169.254.144.13. The only time you get this address is if two conditions exist. One is the wksts tcp/ip properties are set to autoassigned and two if there is no dhcp that replied to the wksts request for a ip address.

A wireless router has to be configured
So does the wireless interface on the wkst.

First step is make sure the cable from the modem goes into the routers wan port not a lan port.

Second is to start at page 1 on the routers manual and follow the instructions page by page. It will walk you through how to access your router and what to configure when. If you can assemble a kids bike or a shelving unit you can configure a home router.

You will need a patch cable so you have a wired connection from pc/laptop to the router. You can't configure wireless while connected wirelessly.

You have here for any questions/stumbling blocks.

Example of Oxymoron:

Person who is pro life and anti sex education.
Education is key to prevention. Prevent conception you prevent abortion.

Abstinence training clearly isn't working.
