Comment: Hi, I've set up a wireless router (linksys befw11s4 ver4)running from the pc with xp home. I've run the network setup wiz on the computer running xp home, created the network setup disk and run that on a second pc with win 98. I can see the second pc in my network places and can share files from this pc. The problem is that I cannot see the host pc in network places on both pc's. I can ping the other pc's IP but can't ping from the second to the host. All network protocols and sevices are correctly installed in the LAC on the host. If I right click a folder to share from the host pc I get 'an error occured while trying to share...The server sevice is not started' Any Ideas to help....??? azzer

Reply: (edit)If you have a router hooked up, then there is not a Host. Each PC is independent of each other. They are "Peers", hence "A peer to peer network. Make sure any firewall software is configured properly. In Win 98, if you are using the password protected file share, try disabling the password and make the file read only. Do you have a cable or DSL modem? Is your router and pcs matched up (Password, ssid, channel, mode, etc)

Reply: (edit)The computer that cannot be pinged probably is protected by a firewall. Disable or uninstall firewalls until you get a working network. The message "The server sevice is not started" probably means that the Server service is not started. So, start it and make the Startup Type 'Automatic.' To do so: Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Click on Server service; click on Start the service. Click on Tools - Properties to change the Startup Type. GRP, it sounds to me like azzer has an infrastructure network; he likely wouldn't be using the router if he had a peer to peer (ad hoc) network. Terry
