Network File Transfer Problems

I have connected my laptop (Gateway Solo 600 Mhz P3, 64mb ram WIN ME) to my desktop (1.1Ghz AMD, 256mb ram WIN ME) using a crossover cable and TCP/IP protocols. Everything works fine as far as connecting and being able to share printers and files. The problem is the speed of file transfers. When transfering files from the laptop to the desktop it is lightening fast, but when transfering from desktop to laptop it is extremely slow (7mb file took 15 minutes). I set this up to move files from my desktop to my laptop so you can see why this might be a problem. I currenty must use NETBEUI instead of TCP/IP but the connection dies when a computer goes into standby and I am bout to uprade to XP, so I need to know how to configure TCP/IP correctly before I do my upgrade.

Go with TCP/IP and disgard the Netbeui. Why I say that is that Netbeui was ditched by Microsoft. It is Windows and lower versions of OS. Yet still is on Windows 2000 but on Windows 2000 you have the choice of Netbeui or TCP/IP.
