network connection problem

Specs: Windows XP
I had connect a laptop having WIN vista installed on to a pc having win XP via NIC and crossover CAT5 Cable
when trying to ping from CMD the laptop can see the other PC but the PC cant see the laptop??? although the windows firewall is disabled in both laptop and pc.
could anyone advise

This sounds to me like you have them communicating properly. Likely the PC not seeing the laptop has to do with vista and it's firewall. The firewall on the laptop may be set to not reply to ICMP requests (ping).

But if the laptop is able to ping the XP PC and get a reply, your network is working.
