Comment: Hi I recieved a toshiba satellite pro 6100 today and have tried to add it to my network today but have had serious troubles. Everytime I run the network wizard it runs fine but i cant find the other computer on the network. If i click repair connection then it says that that the following steps of the repair failed "renewing the ip address". It recognises it fine saying the LAN is connected but I cant use it at all. A couple of times Ive been able to see the laptop in the workgroup but have been able to access it and the laptop has been unable to see the desktop. I tried releasing the ip manually using command prompt but that just comes up with an error saying that the DCHP was unable to be contacted so it timed out. I also tried joing it to the internet directly using the ethernet card but had all the same problems. I appear to have the same settings on the laptop as the desktop but itstill doesnt work. also tried uninstalling and upgrading the drivers but it still doesn't work. Please help me!! Cheers Jason

Reply: (edit)Is the other running NetBeui? Also it sounds like you have the laptop to use DHCP. Is there a device that is issuing ip addresses? Have you verified the network connection and the cable are working?

Reply: (edit)i dont think im running netbeui and i dont know what else could be issuing the ip, any suggestions? I did check the cables and hub etc, im assuming that the network adapters ok because it can ping itself. when i use net view on the other desktop i can view the laptop and other pc but when i try to ping it, it cant find the name, going round in circles! When I run ipconfigit has the following Windows ip configuration host name : Me primary dns sufffix : "blank" node type : unknown ip routing enabled : No WINS proxy enabled : No Ethernet adapter Local Area connection connection specific DNS suffix : "Blank" Description : My card Physical address : 00-00-39-2E-2D-CE DHCP enabled : Yes Autoconfiguration enabled : Yes Autoconfiguration IP address : 169.254.7.46 Subnet mask : 255.255.0.0 Defalt gateway : "Blank" Does that help?

Reply: (edit)You said "hub". Do you have a router on your network? If you have a hub is it connected between the desktop PC and the cable/DSL modem? What are the first two numbers of the desktop's IP address?

Reply: (edit)If all you have is a hub, most ISPs only allow one IP per connection so you would have to either buy a router, set up ICS or pay your ISP for another IP. Hubs do not work like routers. They are just repeaters - all traffic goes to all ports.

Reply: (edit)well actually the problenm is that you dont have a default gateway. since it is the default gateway (router) assigning the dynamic IP address.

Reply: (edit)OK, i'm not using a router but then i haven't got an internet connection on the network yet. I configured the network setup wizard for a network without an internet connection. The first two numbers of the desktop are 169.254.xx.xx as with the laptop. I followed the link but I did everything it said there but recieved no joy. It did mention someting about pinging the DCHP but i don't seem able to. I'm out of ideas about what to do next!!

Reply: (edit)first off, your ISP has a router, which if you dont have one, the router your ISP has connects to your computer assigning it dynamic addresses as a DHCP host. now, you cant ping sonmething that is not there, i dont understand how you pinged the DHCP if you dont have a default gateway. but anyway the problem seems to be that your ISP or something doesnt notice your computer. you could call your ISP and ask them to help. who is your ISP by the way?

Reply: (edit)ok sorry i read in a guide posted that you should ping the DHCP but as i have no internet connection that would be difficult ay! I think it might be a faulty network card, at last I hope it is! Cheers for the help, time to talk to the manufacturers i think

Reply: (edit)The fact that you are getting 169.254.x.x means that you are not getting an ip address from a DHCP server. How are you connecting it to a network? If you have no router and no hub , unless I missed in the other posts, then what are you calling a network? What is the machine plugged into?
