Hi, Found this website by browsing for help with network problems. I was wondering if somebody, anybody could tell me what is wrong. I searched the forums for similar questions, didn't get any wiser...
I was just using the internet today and all of a sudden my internet went down, got the message "a network cable has been unplugged"
We have two computers, the first computer runs win ME and has the (dsl) modem and a d-link 4 port router and then from that is a cable to my computer. I tried the (lan?) cable between this computer and the router and it seems to be working fine. Also tried different ports, the light blinks really slow and the light in the back of my computer is blinking orange. (However it's green when the computer is turned off)
I've tried to establish a new copnnection on my computer but i get a screen that says that there is a network but it's just not hooked up, also for my broadband connection it says disconnected and for my local area network it says disconnected.
I'm running windows Xp on my pc, I wasn't messing around with any settings or anything and the internet works fine on the other computer, router works, cable works, what could it be?
I don't know very much about computers, just had the other one fixed so... can anyone help me?
If you need any more information please ask, if it means you can possible be of some help!
The lan(?) cable and router are both only about a week and a half old.Thanks....

Hi,
Ar> ...got the message "a network cable has been
Ar> unplugged"... ...the first computer runs win
Ar> ME and has the (dsl) modem and a d-link 4 port
Ar> router... If you need any more information...Yes, more information would help. Mainly, if that
were happening to me, one of the 1st things i'd do
would be to find out the address of the router in
order to be able to manage it... Next, i'd remove
the router and do the same with the MoDem. Once i
get access to both separately and i know their IPs
correspond to a same SubNet, i'd put them back and
verify that the Router is configured accordingly. For example, i had my sister's LinkSys BEFSR41 v3
Router talking to my GNet BB0060B MoDem only after
i adjusted their IPs (LynkSys is using 192.168.1.1
and GNet 192.168.7.1, which are typical defaults). The unplugged or partly working status you get are
not likely to be related to the HardWare at all...;-)
The other thing i'd do is plug all computers to the
Router while i simply let it manage the MoDem... I
am not certain what you meant by mentioning they're
both connected to your Windows ME system, actually.8-o

I meant that the modem and router are sitting by the windows ME computer, I guess that doesn't make any difference.
How do I do the Ip thing? I have no idea how to do any of that and the book for the router doesn't mention any such thing... (And how come it did work before?) Or do you mean what you do when you first get it, I have a d-link router, you hjave to go to a website and then go through a few steps to get the internet working? Do you mean that?
I'm sorry, I don't know a thing about computers... but I need them. :S

Hi,
Ar> ...the modem and router are sitting by the
Ar> windows ME computer, I guess that doesn't make
Ar> any difference.Your cabling does matter, just as your brand/model
numbers and your operating system, to some extent.AR> How do I do the IP thing?
Usually, that's mentioned in the documentation but
i don't have it right now. since both devices are
still unknown, the first step is to identify them! The MoDem and Router configuration i refered to in
my previous post is one example where an owner may
prefer to use his Router like a Switch since there
is a Router in the MoDem already in some cases. A
combination of devices like this is very different
from the regular MoDem + Router setup because that
implies specific cabling and parameters... That's
only one possibility, identification is no option. When we know what HardWare you use, it will become
possible for the audience to get the documentation
from its own resources or from your manufacturers;
help us help you if you need further assistance!!!;->

Have you tried simply powering off the DSL modem and router, leaving them off for several minutes, and then powering them back on? Try powering off the PC, the router, and the modem in that order, and then powering them back on in the reverse order.

Im having the same sort of problem.
I live in a flat owned by my uni, they supply me with an internet connection.
A couple of days ago my pc was running fine on the internet, no errors, nothing.
All of a sudden i start getting errors saying a network cable is unplugged OR that i have little or no internet activity.
However if i simply unplug the network cable and plug it into my laptop like i have done at the moment then the internet works fine. Im not sure what the problem is with my pc though. Ive got a cisco 575 LRE modem and im running on Windows XP.
Anyone help?
Thanks in advance,
Miles
