What could be the problem? Network cable is connected but pc says it is not. Everything is as should be in device manager. Network connections has 2 devices listed; 1394 net adapter and the LAN connection with a red cross on it. RightClick LAN adapter not much is active, only disable, bridge, and check properties. Can't check status or repair . I RightClick the 1394 net adapter and everything is available there but can't help me solve the Internet connection problem. Any sugestion is highly appreciated!

The 1349 net adaptor is your fire-wire connector. Although it can be used for network connections it is normally used connecting Video devices.

The LAN connections with the red cross is the one you should be concentration on. The red cross indicates that there is a problem with it, probably needs its driver installed or it is disabled.

Thanks for a quick response!
This is a friend's pc and evrything's been working fine before. My first guess was viruses or cloged system for it had several outdated av software. Then I also did suspect the NIC or it's drivers but after installing another NIC and geting the same problem I gave up on that. Then I reinstalled windows using the original manufacturer's software CDs and the problem still persists. I've now ran out of options.

No you haven't run out of options. As Stuart said, this is likely a driver problem, or the NIC itself is broken. You haven't tried installing the most recent NIC drivers yet.

Find the most recent, up-to-date drivers for your NIC and install them. If the issue goes away, problem resolved.

If not, you may have a bad NIC. If you can get another one to test with that you know works, then you can figure out if it's the NIC or not.

The most recent, up-to-date drivers for the NIC is installed, I have also tested with a working NIC but the same issue persists! Prior to all that, I reinstalled the system using OEM CDs but still with no results. Any sugestions are highly aprecieted!
