Comment: me and my buddy are tryin to have a lan with wan downstairs(everyones together and everyones got internet. the problem is, i have my sisters comp and another comp that are upstairs.......the two wires for both computers have their endpoints in the same place. i need get our computers downstairs hooked up along with with 2 downstairs into a router and have the cable internet hooked up from that. the problem is that i dont have lan cables that long. me and my friend have like a combined total of like 6 cables, but they arent long enough. is there a device that could connect all the wires together making one long wire, or rather make 2 long ones? what is it called. i wanna find out and buy it quick cuz this will be done on saturday. Reply: (edit)If you don't mind the inherant insecurity if wireless that is. And, it's only less confusing if it works properly right out of the box....which isn't always the case. Let's not even mention the additional cost of the router and new wireless NIC's..... What the original posters is asking about is available and cheap. I forget what they're called offhand but they're for joining two network cables to make them one long one. They run about a dollar or two apiece. Simple solution, call a couple of computer stores and ask.

Reply: (edit)Damn CurtR - You don't have to slam my advice. Sorry I may not have as much knowledge as you, but I thought wireless was a good idea - I ran into the same problem that aluminum riot has and wireless worked great for me. I'll check with you next time before I post anything, ok, CurtR? I'm Rick James BITCH!

Reply: (edit)the wireless is more of a hassle than its worth. and for gaming its a joke, older strategy games are laggy on a access point that is bogged down. You could buy the ones at radioshack and take them back for refund when you are done and tell them taht you didnt need them after all. I try and avoid radioskack unless its a last resort and everything else is closed beacuse their prices are ridiculous. another idea. run some of the CATV wire that the cable modem transmits onto into where the lan is and run wires from there. most people have a bit of that lying around. just make sure its aluminum shielded beacuse coppershielding is very bad for cable modems

Reply: (edit)Wireless gets laggy? I play CounterStrike, GunBound, Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2 all online - With no lag. And that's even with SBC DSL. Hassle? I got my home network up and running in 30 minutes - I connected 3 computers and all are able to share files and printers. Don't knock it until you try it karunt. I'm Rick James BITCH!

Reply: (edit)your welcome aluminumriot ok loungin, i also have wireless in my house, and its great for internet BUT THAT IS IT! you do realize that a lan is different from a wan(internet play) and chances are that when you play online you dont have other people playing online games on the same access point either, because if ya didn you would know what im talking about. Also have you seen the other posts about setting up wireless and how much trouble they have. This is a more simple easy, and evenutally cost free solution for his problem. since the access point would be up a floor and probably having to do with interference, wireless would NOT be the way to go. its made for line of sight, unless you by a antenna amplifier which are costly if you dont make them yourselves. If you can play Halo PC just fine, then you have no problem to fix.

Reply: (edit)Karunt, My apologies - I wasn't meaning for my last post to sound like it should be applied to aluminum riot's case - More just defending wireless in general. I don't really understand the whole line of sight issue because i have two computers with wireless adapters in my room. The router is behind two fairly thick walls and I never really have problems. And I would have to say that wireless is definitely better for more things that just the internet. I guess I'll just have to agree to disagree with you!! I'm Rick James BITCH!

Reply: (edit)A Belkin wireless router is set up. My mom's laptop is hard wired to the router. My dad( as well as myself) uses a Belkin wireless USB adapter. They don't use the internet for much more than email, news, online banking so transmissions are kept to a minimum. I even have a D-LINK wireless PCMCIA card in my laptop and I still get incredible reception - Signal strength is never below 90% and that's wit a different brand. Belikin usually hovers around 80-85%. I'm Rick James BITCH!

Reply: (edit)good deal. the reason it inst lagging probably is because you are the only transmitting on the access point normally. ive had odd problems with wireless like it goes through several walls and the floor up to my brothers room and then people that are within 50 feet of the thing even line of sight cannot connect. It dirves me insane sometimes. If it works for you then great id use it but ive see people have strokes trying to get it to work. its a new technology and as with all new technologies it has its ups and downs and hasnt been perfected quite yet.

Reply: (edit)Yeah - My brother had a pretty hard time getting everything working on his network, but once he did, it stayed that way - Hasn't really messed up since. You do make a good point about the technology not being perfected - I guess it's a give in that when it comes to technology, it might not ever be perfect... But when you think about it - We have WIRELESS internet - That in itself is a huge feat - I'm sure it will get tweaked with time - We as consumers just have to be patient. I'm Rick James BITCH!

Reply: (edit)this is my plan.my sisters comp cant be moved and the guy upstairs' computer cant be moved. their network wires both end up in her room. im just gonna stretch it down the stairs with the cuples. downstairs im gonna hook my modem up to the cable tv thing and then the router to that.then the 2 wires that are commen from upstairs will be hooked up to it and the 2 computers(mine and my friends) will be hooked up there. that should hopfully work.
