i'm trying to create a direct connection via ethernet between a desktop running windows 7 ultimate and a laptop running vista home premium. i've done this before between xp and vista, xp and xp, and vista and vista. can't seem to figure it out for this new os. help?

You mean a direct ethernet connection as opposed to a serial or parallel connection.

They made W7 pretty secure even for local lans. You'd need to use that keycode you generated on the W7 box on the Vista to connect.

See the help and support pages for share folders. There isn't a real good how to but if you read a few you should get connected.
